Might seem a bit silly to recommend King Kong (1933) but I took my 10yo to see it last year and we had such a blast! The stop-motion animation is a delight, and it really does still work as an adventure. Worth warning you that it is incredibly racist, I'm afraid.

So Long, My Son (Wang Xiaoshuai, 2019) is a really stunning modern epic, which I wish had carved out an audience. The writing, and the kind of 19th century rigour/determinism at play, are exemplary, and Wang Jingchun and Yong Mei rightly won prizes at Berlin for their performances.

Witness For the Prosecution (Billy Wilder, 1957): can you call a film "charismatic"? Wilder and his trio of actors are having a lot of fun here and the intensity of the late twist is a bit of a wallop! I saw a scene from this on TV aged 6 or so and had never forgotten it, until rewatching last year.

What's Up, Doc? (Peter Bogdanovich, 1972) I have mixed feelings about Streisand but she is really fresh and game in this modern riff on screwball, which features a perfectly wonderful car chase. Also: Ryan O'Neal in glasses, pants and socks. Also: Madeline Kahn! Delightful.

Top Hat (1935): my favourite of the Astaire/Rogers movies, with some absolutely beautiful, giddy dancing. I especially like Isn't This A Lovely Day, where Rogers reveals she can dance, but Cheek To Cheek is also knockout. The story's flimsy vaudeville/romance goes down surprisingly well!

Letter From an Unknown Woman (Max Ophüls, 1948): I really love Joan Fontaine in this lovely, heartbreaking, swooningly literary film, which proceeds by flashback to tell a story that isn't as it seems. A melodrama that touches so intelligently on so much else, it is carried along by a rare delicacy.

I watched this when I was about nine or ten I think (tea time, BBC2 probs). My brother and I loved it, even though it seemed very ancient. My mum told me my grandfather saw it at the flicks when it came out and that blew my tiny mind I can tell you.
