I wouldn’t think “moved to root out diversity initiatives” is a useful phrase for journalism at all, but using it as a euphemism for a purge of high ranking black officers is downright Orwellian.

My daily reminder of why I cancelled my subscription to NY Times. Who gets paid to choose the most disingenuous vocabulary that waters down the truth of what is actually happening? Are factual terms, such as "racism", "fascism", & "anti-constitutional" not allowed?
Every once in a while (okay, quite often nowadays) something happens that compels me to remind everyone that "ethnic cleansing" started out as a polite, positive-sounding euphemism to get away from calling it genocide.
If we have any strong leaders left in the military they need to make themselves known right now. Are they going to follow the constitution or spit polish the shoes of the Felons white DEI choice for joint chief. We don’t need Hitler wanna be generals we need America’s best
@nytimes.com is worse than useless if it believes that firing top brass is to root out diversity appointments. What about the top JAGs? Trump wants control of the military and through it, control of the American people. This purge should have resulted in SCREAMING headlines.
What’s going on? Is it legal? Do we have a problem? How do we deal with this? Is it time to assemble? Has the enemy within reached the threshold? Do the governors need to take control? Has the president gone rogue ? Has the time for resistance arrived?
I see the NYT is back to sucking up to trump, not that they’ve made much of a credible attempt to criticize any of this MAGA shitshow.
Anyone who looks at Brown’s resume and thinks he is a “diversity initiative” could never do a tenth of what that man has accomplished in service to this nation
MAGA knows where the norms are, that institutions love them, and exploits that to set the narrative. One takeaway from all this is that billionaires have too much power relative to the government. Another is abiding by norms doesn’t save them (see also paradox of tolerance).
They're just repeating Hegeth's words:
"any general or admiral involved in "DEI woke s---" should be removed … has made the race card one of his biggest calling cards".
"The War on Warriors": alleged Brown "built his generalship dutifully pursuing the radical positions of left-wing politicians …"
WHAT a LOSS of talent and commitment to our country.
THINK of the INSTITUTIONAL KNOWLEDGE leaving with this gentleman.
And ALL due to the ego of an incompetent, easily offended buffoon who is terrified of criticism or being shown up, especially if that person is:
- a woman or
- a person of color.
Agree.
Mediocre white folk in the White House setting the new federal standard - that is, by lowering it. Fascists/ racists always underestimate the abilities of people they class as their inferior.
Segregation, pass laws, ‘race’ identification and apartheid are the next step USA.
This last month has been a blitzkrieg to appoint Trump’s troopers. They decapitate each organisation rendering it inoperable, rogue and dangerous with their lack of talent and stupidity.
This fucking newspaper. What about this man’s career indicates he achieved his rank via a “diversity initiative,” whatever that is. Hey, New York Times, maybe he’s just good at his job. Why are you repeating dishonest MAGA framing? Cowards.
It should be clear by now that the official policy of this administration is to repeal the entire Civil Rights Movement.
I'm having visions of their ultimately repealing Brown v Board of Ed. It wasn't so long ago that saying this would have been considered certifiably nuts. Is it NOW, I ask you?
Any article on this topic is garbage if it doesn’t point out that General Brown and Admiral Franchetti are wildly capable and accomplished, and Trump and Hegseth are not worthy to shine their shoes
One wouldn’t think…. Unless, apparently, you’re more afraid of the felon-in-chief & other fELON than you are of losing democracy for ur kids; still believe u can appease a bully…
For certain. The Fourth Estate has failed the country for certain. The level of sanewashing or downplaying/minimizing the insane, repugnant; illegal or unconstitutional is breathtaking.
I so agree, that is a very distasteful way of putting it. & this move is alarming, esp considering what Hegseth has in mind too-which his latest move & future plans were covered in an earlier article. Hegseth basically wants to cut the "fat" & get down to lean, mean & warrior ethos (aka war crimes).
@nytimes.com YOU ARE CREATING MISINFORMATION HERE. Don’t you realize you’ll be shut down anyway once T completes his phase 1 coup? Why make up nonsense about why he’s firing senior black officials?
I’m no longer on the other site, but I was wondering if their tweets are worded differently than their posts here knowing the audience may be slightly redder
With Trump, there are some rules to understand his decisions:
1. Did you make him look bad (Gen. Milley)?
2. You can't do anything for him.
3. Will humiliating you, help him?
4. Is there money to be made?
5. Are you famous so he can share the spotlight?
6. Are you Black/minority (you don't count)?

I think this is a big problem with the current chaos. Some people are using the wrong wording because so many things are coming so quickly. Remember the general public is not super informed on a lot of federal positions and agencies.
Input from people like you is priceless, but go easy please!
I agree for sure, but we used to live in a time when the media would not be so reckless, when there were consequences for them being wrong. I suppose that is our failure as mush as anything. We must relearn how to hold them to account.
Absofuckinglutely!
Reagan got rid of the Fairness Doctrine where news outlets HAD to share an opposing viewpoint and the downfall of media began.
I wish they would enact that again, but how far gone is this regime? That being said, I think we are still the greatest country. 😓
Well I’m sure all our Generals feel just terrible that a Russian asset has taken over the White House. Maybe they complain to their buddies over a whisky about how they completely failed the USA like no other militarily in our history.
Charles Brown Jr has been in the Air Force since 1984. wtf does his achievement have to do with “diversity initiatives”? Why aren’t reporters asking decent questions???
whats interesting is they are choosing to editorialize his reason. like that's not direct factual reporting, they're not couching it, saying "allegedly" or "claims", they're saying they stand by that interpretation
"Moved to root out nonwhite people" is simpler, true, and fewer characters. A bridge to far for a paper whose motto is Truth Dies in our Editorial Office, though.
The NYT article's phrasing is patently racist and defamatory in that it clearly implies the officer was over-promoted by virtue of his 'diversity ' i.e. of his being black.
The word "purge" is more honest about what's going on. The "diversity" stuff is just a litmus test for determining who is unlikely to serve as a Trump loyalist.
How is firing a Black man and replacing him with a far, far less qualified White man -one so unqualified that he needed a waiver - a reaction to a diversity initiative?
That lead sentence below the headline is just as racist as Trump's action, essentially claiming that these officers obtained their positions because of racial preferences, which is objectively false. Shame on you @nytimes.com
I would have reported that trump fired the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, an eminently qualified four star general, because he was black. And that is in fact what the Sec of Defense said.
I also don’t think that’s the only reason he was replaced. They’re going after JAGs and leadership to eliminate opposition to their goals at every level. This is what they’re trying to accomplish when they say “bloodless” civil war. The DEI shit has always been meant to distract✌️
That is not the role of the journalist. Their role is to avoid adding any additional context other than facts(confirmed by 3 independent sources. The writers and editors do not own the paper, the billionaire ownership of the paper are the ones you should go after🤙🏻
Instead of letting the traitors control the narrative, let’s call it out for what it is. “Diversity hire” and DEI hire are used to mean someone “unqualified” who was hired instead of a white man. As if only white men are qualified for leadership.
💯 His appointments, IMO, are a signal to his vladdy daddy that he’s all in on the plan to destroy the gov from the inside. They’re exactly what I expected. I think husk was dispatched to help, partly b/c Putin’s been displeased recently. Toddler has been power drunk & RT talking abt assassination.
😏 Ah, the useful idiot. Like controlled opposition & reflexive control, relics of the old USSR now put on steroids by technology.

Didn’t read the story. But recall there were Republicans attacking Brown at his confirmation for diversity initiatives. So we might have to go a layer deeper to get to the purging.
Absolutely. And I’ve called out on other posts the absurdity & illegality of Trump‘s DEI purge on “merit” in the very fact that he replaces qualified women & PoC exclusively with grossly inferior unqualified White MEN. All Trump hacks, racist & misogynist, & most with corrupt/criminal proclivities.
It’s so frustrating when—even on BlueSky—a woman is treated as unfairly as a male person of color is treated, some people react ONLY to the mistreatment of the male person of color. Racism AND misogyny must be called out.
Not sure if it's sensible to effectively label General Brown, a distinguished 4-star, as a "diversity initiative", which is the (presumably unintended) implication of your phrasing. It was the dei programs Brown, Admiral Franchetti and General Strife promoted that Hegseth and Trump were after.

IMO Trump's desicion is both bc he us a raging racist like his father and also bc he is afraid of the generals. He knows if they are in positoons of power as he continues to become King to Elon's Pres. they could choose to hamper him.

it might just slide by otherwise.
“Trump Fired Senior Military Leadership And JAG Lawyers Who Would Say No To His Impending Illegal Orders.”
Paves the way for turning the military against citizens & US military intimidation and even “invasions” into Mexico, Canada, Panama, Greenland, etc.
"Trump fired exclusively Black and Women leadership in military, replaced them with incompetent white men who had already retired from service"
