It stands for self-addressed stamped envelope. In the Olden Days if you were submitting work to a magazine or requesting information about something that would be mailed to you, you were supposed to include that for the reply.
In the 80s my cousin sent her manuscript to 5 publishers. No agent, no social media platform to build. She got offers from 3 publishers and just picked one. Her book was on big time recommended children’s lit lists. Ahh, the good old days.
I’m (well) over 30 but—I’ve sent out hundreds of submissions for >10 years and have sent exactly one SASE (toward the beginning of that period)! So if the question is “Are these still relevant,” from my pov the answer is a resounding no lol
Hahahahahahaha well I was referencing one in something I'm writing and then realized that maybe I should just spell it out and not use the acronym! But I didn't want to sound like one of those clueless "millennials will never understand" posts if people do still use the term.
Btw my lone SASE took so long to come back that when it finally did it had a congratulatory note for my having published the piece like a year earlier in another mag lol
