Elon Musk's pro-Trump group does not choose the winners of its $1 million-a-day giveaway to registered voters at random, but instead picks people who would be good spokespeople for its agenda, a lawyer for the billionaire said on Monday

Uh… how does that make things better for him? Didn’t he promise those who signed up a random selection? Isn’t it some sort of fraud if it is NOT random?
While i agree with everyone's takes about musk's public statements being deceptive, my non-lawyer-and-possibly-very-wrong understanding is that it matters if there was fine print saying it was random during sign-up, and we all know how that usually turns out
Have they gotten the money yet or were they just announced as winners? I still firmly believe Elon has no intention of paying anything until shown otherwise
Pretty sure the recipients are also on the hook for partipating in an illegal lottery (or possibly, given what the lawyer just said, actively participating in a fraud).
This is not directly in my areas of expertise, so up-front disclaimer that I could be wrong, but:
Even if the recipients are deemed not culpable (eg. if they’re deemed victims of fraud rather than accessories to it), they’re still going to have IRS issues.
Sounds like they still have to "earn" the money after "winning" because it's a salary and not a prize? I get that they picked folks that will willingly go along with whatever, but what if I just entered to get the million bucks, not promote this idiotic PAC?
Four hours later, the PA hearing on Elon Musk's $1M lottery scheme is still going, and Musk's top political aide, Chris Young, is testifying (via Teddy Schleifer)
Which aide (but not memoire natch) helped DeathSantis spend more per vote than anyone in history (did that include Bloomberg, Burgum, and Phillips?), wasn't it one of these guys?

NDAs seem bad. Like if it's specifically "don't tell people what our secret sauce is" that's one thing but it seems like it's usually "don't tell people all the illegal things we did including abusing you personally."
What's frustrating is that there's no way to hold EM accountable for anything, short of incarceration, which I don't think is an option in this scenario.
My dumb ass thought this would be the kind of scam where he comes up with some excuse not to pay. It didn't occur to me it was a money laundering, tax fraud type of scam.
Im not a fancy lawyer, but it strikes me that 'despite how it was advertised, this isn't a giveaway' does nothing to dispute that a promise of a giveaway was made in exchange for registering to vote and signing a petition, which is the actual legal issue at hand?
Loovely! So he promised the chance to win to everybody who signed the petition. But who cares? These stupid poor people can all go away, they're not important. Much better to give some money to the deserving rich, instead of to the undeserving greedy poor people. He sure is something (insert curse).
Or to put it another way, only those who are far-right mouthpieces get the money. Yes, Elmo, we see exactly where your creepy and crooked a** is comin' from. 🤨
Nice, so not only is he violating election laws by running an illegal lottery for voters, but he’s also committing fraud by running a fraudulent illegal lottery.
Mark my words, Musk may sense criminal prosecution and will become very dangerous to get Trump in power to escape any charges.

But we know that people don't do that

How apt.

Also probable though.

But that makes it fraud?

Bold defense.
