Have I had my mind changed on social media? Yes - NOT by arguing with randoms, but by following experts and first hand folks who share what they do, what they think and what's going on. The change isn't binary - I used to think one thing, and suddenly now another - it's slow and additive: Learning.

Cognitive basis is sugar to the brain. Very hard to see but easy to enjoy.
One, but the lightbulb has to want to change.”
He can’t find the key and doesn’t know when to come in. “
That's almost like cheating
There is one matter that I did have significant change and that was based on writings by Laurell K. Hamilton and comics by @thedevilspanties.com.
Question from a newbie here but long time follower over there…
How goes the guitar playing?
They have been consuming hate for decades and are in too deep to quit now.
Like my Grandfather used to say-
Learning ain't easy. Staying the same is and it'll get you nowhere fast.
I hate blocking people. Goes against my nature. But peaceful dialogue grows you while anger reduces you.
Grats.
Just kidding. It is good to be open to learning more. I wish our culture fostered more of that.
And seeing you here brings me back! Once upon a time you. responded to me on Twitter. It was a definite highlight of my day :)
Totally grateful for all the smart people here. 🙏

There's an addendum (not the Oatmeal) which has to do with how cults work to change peoples' core beliefs, and how hard it is to get in there once someone's in a cult.
MAGA has a -lot- of cult like features, at the very least.
No, that doesn't get the rest of us off the hook.

My best friend is conservative & I've learned a lot from her. But what can I possibly learn from someone who says in their descriptions that they are here to gloat, spout bigotry, or rub people faces in election results.
Some of them are curated with care, blocking only obviously abusive users, and some go overboard.
Moderation and curation is hard to do well.
If two PhDs disagree who is right?
Trump, not so much. Are we the new banana republic?
I'm a better person because of people sharing their experiences and perspectives on social media.
If you come looking to have your ignorance reinforced that will be all that your have
ignorance
BITD, mid 70's, I finally learned basic arithmetic. Grade Eleven, for the Physics class we were taking. The teacher required a certain level of effort more than proficiency, but it did require being able to do these basic arithmetic operations. I tried my hardest but ended with an average
you too can learn things by trying. we all can.
Never seen it before on social media. 😄
And the key is that there needs to be some kind of relationship in place OR the willingness to listen. Preferably both.
Look hard enough and you'll be able to find a so-called expert or another source in just about any field willing to disagree with everyone else. That's what happened with vaccines causing autism, a doctor said so it must be true!
Do you have any recommendations for SEC football experts?
Best,

I want to watch experts debate in a moderated forum, not read 150 word treatises on complex economic concepts by someone with a 6th grade reading level.
I agree with you
I have learned tons by following people I trust. I don't even watch the news anymore
Twitter slowly changed my life for the better! Or at least contributed to it
Then X happened
"you know what thinking is? It's just a fancy word for changing your mind"

some of my southern elders used to say "bought sense is better than learned"
& I didn't get that statement until after some years of going through rough setbacks in life & I paid the piper & definitely learned from situations I went through.
The bigger error is avoiding learning new things because we are afraid of error.
*Unless you blow up the lab…
And even then, it’s still data. 😁
And some of those do end with "And did you learn from that?"
"Uhh...sure. Eventually..."
Man, did I feel stupid!
Just a remarkable resource
(Autocorrect just tried to change that to adopters three times, a word with an entirely different meaning. )
I recently read a saying, "If you're the smartest person in the room, you're in the wrong room." I feel like this place, Bluesky, is the right room.
