I need to do the switch too, but I feel locked in: I have so many ebooks bought from amazon that I won’t be able to carry over (don’t have an epub backup…) :’(
You can still buy new books on not-Amazon and email them to your kindle. I managed to download all my kindle books before Amazon shut down that option, then put them on a Kobo e-reader. But my housemate still has a kindle and I can send him epubs. 😊
Indeed, but I’d like to replace the reader itself (slow and sluggish, and can’t browse the store from the device) and not having an epub backup of my books is a problem that I should have foreseen and is locking me in to kindle… :(
You know, I’ve never thought to ask an author this before… I stopped trying to write a book 20 years ago, but how many times do you reread what you’ve written before you get going on the next part? I had a bad habit of reading and editing the whole thing before starting the next chapter.
Write it. First editing pass. Second editing pass, This Time With Friends. A few more passes, why not. Read it to follow during audiobook production. Listen to audiobook proofs. I easily read my book at least half a dozen times before it came out if not double that. But I wasn't sick of it, so, win!
There are some of us who are disabled and on a limited income that unfortunately use it for supplements and medical supplies. Medicare doesn't cover a hell of a lot.

I found that electing not to shop online results in significant savings in my account.
It reshaped my concept of need vs want.
I pollute the planet less & I have the president to thank for this.
Also, I like the history of boycotting, & I boycott all corporations minus internet, phone, insurance.
I just finished the audiobook. I firmly believe this is the best Wil Wheaton performance I have ever heard. I actually shed tears in a few chapters. 5 stars.
I tried to format it to print a few copies but the technology was beyond me ten years ago! The whole Kids Guide book is on my old Wordpress blog though - https://kitnick.wordpress.com When I read it now the story seems optimistic!
Lol similar to when you are playing some sort of app games or other stuff & they pop up adds for apps that you already use. Lol thank you for trying but already use that app.
🤣🤣🤣🤣
But this time you might discover something you missed while writing it, or during all re-reads! Although, I laughed so hard during the "eclipse chat" chapter, it's possible that chapter might be a hazard to one's health!
I had that happen to me once. I also was once told that “authors like this” included Tom King and Brad Meltzer, which is nice to hear and all, but profoundly untrue.
Control is the only explanation. It creeps me out when AI knows you better than you do.. or AI is changing you and your children into how or what they want us to be read, buy, sell, believe, and behave. What comes 1st, our thoughts, or what AI wants us to think? How can we tell ours from theirs?
🤖: The Algorithm suggests you have aligned interests with [John Scalzi]:
- Science fiction
- Military fiction
- Star Trek
Ergo, WHEN THE MOON HITS YOUR EYE has been recommended as a First Read for you, for a limited time. 👍
I just discovered you, my friend. Better late than never, I guess. I saw your recommendation (to someone some time ago on this site) to start with Old Man's War ... so I did. Now I want to read everything you've written! 😃
Just finished "Starter Villain". Pretty good although I thought it was going to include cats predicting the future after the wedding gift note. Love the potty mouth dolphins!
Q: Why are there grey off-kilter lines behind each chapter heading? Cat hair?
Are you sure it's the one you wrote? Amazon posts exact knockoffs of books right next to the real one. Certainly, you are not excluded from Amazon piracy. Better check dude.
Just finished it myself. I like to think of it as an alternative timeline to the beginning of the first chapter of Seveneves (which is one of the most eerily accurate portrayals of a nightmare I had as a kid) with a dash of Lucifer’s Hammer, but Scalzi style with humor and less “people are awful” 💜
My main beef with Seveneves so far is that all the secs of humanity have changed so much, but they are all still awful to each other. So maybe I’ll give Scalzi’s book a try.
I’ve largely stopped watching TV because most shows are mostly people being awful to each other. Even the comedies, much of the time the “comedy” is someone’s misfortune or something.
For more sci-fi that’s less war and awfulness check out Becky Chambers, and Trader’s Tales by Nathan Lowell
Becky Chambers is an absolute delight. I’ve heard her genre referred to as “hope punk” or “solar punk”.
Trader’s Tales series still has “people being awful” but it’s less, and challenges overcome. Awful people getting what they deserve, due to the actions of good people. Trading rather than war.

I will check it out!!
Not from Amazon though sorry I will figure it out
Also, Amazon really needs an "ignore" button like Steam.
Now I’m wondering how common an occurrence this is…
Bezos always knows. Like a reverse Santa
Hope you tell your friends NOT to buy it from Amz. There are so many deserving alternatives!
Sounds like a good suggestion. ;)

If you bought it from Amazon UK or Canada would there be a tariff on it. Or is it just on things made in that country.

By the time its published you can recite it chapter and verse ;-p

You know, for science.
