FWIW, I "coded" Murderbot as female, too -- from the books. My husband "coded" it as male. I suspect our kids coded it as non-binary, but that takes thought for me.

I think this hints at why Murderbot is not specifically stated to be either male or female in appearance. The ambiguity allows the reader to interpret its gender through their own perspective, allowing everyone to more easily personally identify with MB.

I love the Murderbot books.
I've always been struck by how they don't read or feel like any of Wells' other books though. It's like she becomes a different person when writing these.
Wasn't there a Stephen King book about that?

I adore the books, but this is one of those cases where I can't see the value of watching an adaptation. I like my mental image of all of this just fine. That said, I wish Martha all the financial success in the world with this project, she deserves it!

By the end of book 3 there's a definite frisson developing between murderbot and Dr Mensah, which continues.. maybe brainsex, or love even, but as MB says, "I hate caring about stuff. But apparently once you start, you can't just stop."

I learned about the murder bot novellas from a line in Kaiju preservation Society. And my teen daughter just finished a book report on the first three, and now the English teacher is looking at making it a regular part of the curriculum. You never know where one line in a book will take you.

I saw a good discussion on Reddit about how this is great AMAB non-binary representation, that not everyone has a body that looks like their gender. Murderbot's gender may be "absolutely not", but the Company will have wanted their SecUnits to look like big white blokes.

The first two episodes popped last night in my time zone so I watched them immediately.

Fully approved. It's an adaptation, but what they've added/modified still feels "right". Excellent work from all involved.

They totally missed that it’s neurospicy coded!

Even in the first two episodes we sense that Gurathin wishes he was a robot even as Murderbot is tortured by eye contact!

There are some amazingly well acted and directed scenes that contain subtlety and subtext.
