Things come and go, and I don't begrudge romantasy its moment in the sun, not in the least because when people come into the bookstore for that romantasy book, they sometimes leave with additional books in tow. Any book that brings people into the store is a good one for the rest of them.

Right now, you can see the Scifi section shrinking each time you go to the bookstore to make more room for fantasy because of the fairy!porn popularity and the pan to publish more romantasy. I just wish it's popularity didn't take shelves away from Scifi (which once you remove the dune shelves...)

They need to allow other people and other ideas to come to the forefront of society.
It's time for the world to move on from the bro-dudes and their out-of-date and out of touch attitudes.
Badly written books in any genre are bad (Gor springs to mind) but maybe someone will buy The Red Scolars Wake, or Someone to Build A Nest In, and get the bug
Sometimes John... Sometimes?
I'm not sure about others, but I have to limit my bookstore visits over fear of bankruptcy. As I say to friends, reading is a novel experience. 😁
Both franchises had the ability to have a love story in them.
I, personally, would like to find more SCIENCE fiction. Actual near future possible technology and concepts from physics and chemistry in the story. I remember some juvenile SciFi from the 70s and 80s that got me interested in science and tek
I have some Science Fiction books that I think are great, but there are also some Fantasy books that are just as good.
My taste in books changes all the time, I like books from both sides of the fence.
Only thing I couldn't sell were purses, because...
"Are you interested in this purse that, while it is technically blue, does not in anyway match the blue of the shoes you just decided to buy?" is not a winning pitch.
Sure it's not like 1992, when sci fi was the most populous fiction, but it still exists just fine.
They shall buy whatever they want.
I myself found myself too often, for my taste, confronted with expectations that I try other literature when buying Science-Fiction.
Lesson: Putting quality expectations onto the reading of others, rather sooner than later comes back to bite you.
Yes, science literacy is low, but it pretty much always has been.
Tho, the wildcard this time is the impending ecological catastrophe that few are paying attention to. 30 years from now I think the cycles all end.
That's what I love about Sci-Fi, is the ability to allow the reader to travel through time, space, and dimensions.
I'm a writer, and Sci-Fi is just amazing to me.
1) The haters have become a lot better organized than the literate
2) Others has become a lot more literate, throwing the haters into much starker contrast
And the series feels more current, more grown up; there's adult character development. Treasure Island is a coming of age story so it's very saccharined.
That's interesting! I've not read any DCC as I assume it's DND inspired and I just can't get into anything like that 🙈
Romantasy novels (and all Romance novels IIRC) very much follow a ritual path through the plot, like stations of the cross. Like Catholic mass, the ritual is comforting.
There’s no reason science fiction romance can’t be a thing. The elements are already there.
The alien lover novels are already there so people should work fast!
I don’t claim to be good at naming genres.
It does feel like its hard to find other stuff in that section occasionally.
Liaden, Vorkosigan ... Strong romance, but not at the expense of the other storylines.
Additional books in tow...yep. my entire family.
"No one's here because they only read comics. Lots are here because they can't read."
I have up on my elitism there. Read what makes you happy - including comics. 😎
