Blame a party with a huge majority which could have done anything but instead went for Austerity 2: The Sequel. More of the same is no longer an answer. Blaming the BBC avoids answering the questions for Starmer's pretty comprehensive rejection. There's still time, just.

The really shocking thing is not the BBC saying so, but that the electorate really has now elevated them to a mainstream party, with the largest number of votes cast and councillors elected - all on nothing more than an unsubstantiataed claim that things are broken and they will fix it.

It will be important that now they are in effective control of several councils, their opposition parties do a thorough job of scrutiny, holding them to account and exposing their lack of competence and ideas. Local government is about far more than just "stop the boats".
