I'd watch at least 2-3 episodes of an Office-style sitcom set in 2025 where everyone is inexplicably dressed in ankle length leather and latex trench coats, corsets, goth girl boots etc. Sunglasses inside. Play it straight but with apocalyptic tones hinted in the background. Like a JG Ballard story.

Cannot tell you how formative that period was for me.

12 years old, PC Gamer subscription, which I read with the fine dedication of a bible scholar.

Obviously THAT review, but man, it felt like a crashing wave of creativity in that period.

Maybe. That's one of the things which is both true - nostalgia is powerful - but also incomplete. Like, music history has periods where people generally go "That was a good year" which wouldn't be true if good music was just "whatever was popular when you were 17".

2000 was interesting in that it was the last gasp for a bunch of stuff. Is there interesting stuff in any period? Yeah, probably, but that doesn't mean there's not something worthwhile and specific in a particular moment. Like, 2008 and 2000 were more interesting years in games than 2004.
