Many people don’t realize those are Spanish names for cities. I lived in San Diego and trying to pronounce the street name “Via De La Valle” was a tongue twister for this white girl who failed Spanish in high school. 😂😂😂
Add: California, San Bruno, San Juan Capistrano, San Clemente, Costa Mesa, Santa Ana, El Cajon, La Mesa, La Jolla, Coronado, San Ysidro, La Costa, El Capitan, El Monte, El Segundo (and the list can go on & on)
Right next door to La Mirada is 𝑳𝒐𝒔 Cerritos. I grew up in both cities.
La Mirada was the first fully planned community, founded in the 1950s. Unfortunately, the plan ran out of ideas in the western sector, so we were left hanging without a county. We pretended to be part of Norwalk.
Maybe because sarcasm usually implies the opposite of the actual words being employed and sometimes additional context is needed to recognize it, like facial expression or tone of voice. If all you have to go on is text, it’s easy to miss. I hoped the screenshot was sarcasm, but wasn’t 💯 sure 😅
And then there is the fact that the world is full of people with zero self awareness who make genuine statements full of unintended irony all the time. Sometimes it’s hard to tell without stalking their profile if they’re just a jerk or if they’re subtly pointing out someone else’s jerkiness 🤷♀️
Um, California used to be Mexico, so people are speaking the historical primary language of the area. A primary language is the language you learned as a child when you didn't know you were learning a language, thus it may be an easier language to speak.
Sadly El Cerrito is no more, flattened for a USPS sorting facility. The town is still there, my mom still lives there, but the little hill, not so much.
I used to manage a call center in San Diego and I got regular complaints from a woman about the Spanish menu prompts who lived on a street called Paseo Ranchero in Chula Vista...
I love that I can teach myself a language that I have hopes of hearing in real life because I’ve never been able to afford to travel outside the country.
Each time I hear someone speaking Spanish in a store I love to see how much I can comprehend. It’s a measure of how far I’ve come in my studies.
Side anecdote: the office where I go for pain management has a virtually all Hispanic front office staff.
Yet, when you call, you hear a recording regarding press one for English and two for Spanish – – and the invitation in Spanish is really English with Spanish words. Atrocious.
It’s sad they are whitewashing our ppl too bc I hear them saying things in gringo to fit in. I don’t blame them but it just shows how intolerant our society is of various cultures. I find other languages soothing and melodic even if I don’t understand so I don’t get it
When she visited France I bet it sickened her to hear French spoken there too right. Or Japanese in Japan. I really don’t need to point out the obvious stupidity and racism of her post right?
Satire is really hard to recognize in print since context is usually missing. However, if you read the comments, you'll understand. Notice every city named is in fact a Spanish name, since, ya know, California was Mexico before white privileged assholes came along. Anyway......
I think this country has been divided on immigration for years. I remember people bitching abt my grandparents speaking Sicilian or Italian. I actually do not recall any complaints about my other grandmother speaking Alsatian.
Besides many probably don’t know the Spanish Empire made claims to the land along the west coast back late in the 1400s. They spoke Spanish there when the area was colonized later in the 18th Century. It’s no wonder the cities have Spanish names.
As an older white person, I am learning Spanish and have been for about 3 years. Every school should have a second language requirement. But then English and spelling are a requirement and a lot of people can't speak or spell, so there's that... education is key to so many things.
What about Chinese, Russian, Turkish, Japanese, Italian, Ukranian etc???? This would be my neighborhood...and alittle Spanish! Love the DIVERSITY FOR MY GRANDDAUGHTERS.
Shoot, with all the Spanish spoken right here in Missouri I really, really regret not paying attention in Spanish Language class... It would make life easier as a salesperson.
Ha! And Sacramento, Encinitas, El Vallejo, Escondido, La Mesa, El Centro, Coachella, San Juan Capistrano, Ramona, Chula Vista. It's all of us, everywhere.
Last time I was in the Detroit/Ann Arbor area - Arabic. Cuban dialect Spanish in Miami. Ethiopian in Silver Spring MD. Gaelic/Irish in South Boston. Italian in Little Italy NYC. Languages are OUR culture as Americans. Love them all.
what bothers me about hearing Spanish in the streets, is that i don't understand enough to eavesdrop on their conversation!
how am I supposed to mind everyone else's business if I only get every 4th word?
For that matter, a majority of US States still have indigenous names, including Missouri ("Wimihsoorita", "people with large canoes" in Illinois, another indigenous tribe with a state named after them)
For the greater part of two decades, I lived below Sunset Boulevard, between La Brea and Fairfax. The area is called West Hollywood. I heard Russian—two blocks south, signs also had Cyrillic letters—French, Portuguese, and other languages as people would walk by. It was awesome!
She's being sarcastic.
She is naming places with Spanish names to show how absurd it is that people are angry about hearing Spanish when so many places have Spanish names.
🎵 I can think of golfing days
When scamming for my life
Was everything this man knew how to do
I would beg grift and borrow
And all I grinned about
Were others’ sorrows
Was there a gene mutation in the white world in the south due to Jim Crow era inbreeding of whites that has resulted in insanity? Yes most definitely 💯
Idk whether to laugh or cry with that post 😳
However moving past the stupidity of naming all the California cities with Spanish names, every immigrant has spoken their own language when they first came to America. Assimilation happens over time not overnight.
Whenever I hear people in the U.S.A. complaining about people speaking Spanish here, all I can hear in my head is a whiny child voice going "mY ColOniZer iS BeTtER tHaN YOUR cOlonIzER!"
I think a 🙄 or something else might have helped people understand. Is there an emoji that’s specifically meant to covet sarcasm? If not maybe we need one when reality is so fucking crazy it’s hard to know.
Does this person know that California, our whole southwest, as well as parts of the northwest, all the way up to Oregon once belonged to Spain? That we got the whole southwest, including California from Mexico, when we invaded it in 1848 when the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was signed?

And epically good satire, mockery, fact checking

😆😎
The stupidity and extremism are so far off the charts that it is much harder to tell who is being sarcastic and who is serious.

She is calling out MAGA for being mad about it, while there are so many cities with Spanish names.
Each time I hear someone speaking Spanish in a store I love to see how much I can comprehend. It’s a measure of how far I’ve come in my studies.
They hate Spanish but live in cities with Spanish names
They pronounce it San PEEdro.

Many people are bilingual.
She is making fun of MAGA
I just checked. She's a left-wing youtuber who likes to annoy MAGA.
However moving past the stupidity of naming all the California cities with Spanish names, every immigrant has spoken their own language when they first came to America. Assimilation happens over time not overnight.
