I'd recommend climbing Stromboli, instead - I did. He's safe enough...

Close call. Too close. But credit where credit is due.
I've done fieldwork on the Etna summit with world experts on the volcano, and we were still caught unawares by ash explosions. Fortunately we were downwind of the major debris, but such events are likely unforecastable.
