Some people read way too much into things. It's a spin off of The wizard of Oz.Does it have that message of course we're living in that day and age. & I'm not a big fan of remakes or spin-offs. You can throw in reboots redo's whatever the hell you want to call it there's no more creativity in movies
Anymore. There's no story lines there's no plots or it's all political with no moral to its story. That's why I quit watching them and I ain't all excited about getting in line for a movie ticket anymore.I created better s*** and story lines when I dm'd dungeons & dragons and that's when I was a kid
Sorry George, but this is Misdirected Blame. Let's not forget that when "the wizard" plummeted into their fair land, the citizens of OZ made HIM The Wizard! So the witch's disposal was mandated by the people.
Thank God our media speaks the truth for us. Instills SOME positive values, even if you're a sheeple just going for a good popcorn experience, you'll leave a little more enlightened and ready to face these next four fascistic years!
And the troll follows me here too... YEAH Barbie was awesome and shows that women kick racist blonde men's asses in the real world and can be aanything they want to be
I just went and saw it yesterday, and I absolutely was thinking that as I was watching this guy fooling all the people that he was powerful, and he was a joke and a fool..!
@muellershewrote.bsky.social, @dgcomedy.bsky.social - This is so perfect. Thought you both might appreciate (and chuckle - goodness knows we need more to laugh about) over this!
The books did it best. Music is great and all but, the Entire messaging was changed with the musical. (Still good-yet irrelevant to Maguire’s plots)
But $$$ works right Gregory?
I have not seen the movie yet, and I’m sure I’ll love it, but when dumbfounded friends ask why I explain that the movie is fanfic of the musical which was fanfic of the books which was fanfic of the Wizard of Oz. As star-studded as it is, I’ll wait for streaming. Especially for a Part 1 of 2
I will push back a tiny. Baum’s Wicked Witch and the books after WofO was fan fiction.
Maguire focused on the “bad guys” and how perhaps- they’re the good guys.
I love how the books show Dorthy and other humans for the weaklings they are.
None of this eekes out in the musical.
The musical decaffeinates the book. And this first movie decaffeinates the musical. The political side of the story is almost anecdotal and Glinda is likable in a 'Legally blonde' fashion.
Still good entertainment, but I don't see many people that hadn't read the books getting it.
[Hi, I have listened to the Wicked cast album once about 10 years before, and saw the movie this morning. I think you have put your finger on the nub of the gist. Personally, I believe I have seen the original movie enough times and certainly heard, THAT song, enough for one lifetime.]
Read the book.
If this grandmother can offer one measly advice - this is it::
READ. READ everything you can.
Quest to read b4 believing.

never saw dorothy as "weak" in the wicked book. just naive and being manipulated by the power mad OZ & the entitled, selfish glinda. combined with a series of misunderstandings.
not having seen the musical i had wondered about all the glinda/elphaba shipping going on. Glinda was not likeable AT ALL
She’s just as annoying in the musical. It’s been a while since books but, I recall none of the characters (except Animal professors) were terribly likable.
The musical kept the characters from the books but gave them a happier ending in a world that wasn’t quite as bleak. To me at least, that screams fanfic revisions.
[I completely do not understand the plot. I felt the same way about Frozen until I ended up with the two CD set and realize that the plot was coherent before Disney got hold of it.]
LMAOO It had nothing to do with her being a Woman or him being a Man. In fact the character that puts everyone against her was Madame Morrible (A Woman).
But whatever, these people are always pining people against each other. Thats their tactic, don’t fall for it.
Yes. We get that. Unfortunately, there were other themes that the writers thought we were too stupid to get the first or second times so they hit us over the head with them. This was clumsily written. They had a massive budget, but apparently nothing for film editing. I was glad to see Bowen Yang.
this film is only part 1. I've not seen the play or read the books but there's something quickly seen towards the end that made me think ..OOOHHH. So I'm guessing when 2 comes out all may be revealed.
I read it years ago. I remember how thought-provoking it was as a revisionist origin story. To put it simply, what we (as in both Elphaba & the reader) may perceive as bad is sometimes misunderstood, and what we perceive as good, may not always be. Just didn't like the rape-felt it was unnecessary.
Also, the lyrics of Popular:
Celebrated heads of state
Or specially great communicators!
Did they have brains or knowledge?
Don't make me laugh!
They were popular!
Please!
It's all about popular
It's not about aptitude
It's the way you're viewed
So it's very shrewd to be
Very very popular

Isn’t this always happening though, when they had the Great Depression, they wanted women to quit their jobs, as they thought that would help.. spoiler it didn’t!
When I watched it, the comparisons we could make to what's happening in the US right now were glaringly obvious. Well, to me and my kid they were obvious. Probably not so much to a bunch of other people 🫤
The book and the musical don’t really match up. The summary presented in this post is pretty much what it boils down to. I’ve seen the musical 20 times. Haven’t seen the movie yet, but it appears to follow the musical exactly.
It’s also an attempt to warp a work, after the creator has died and can’t weigh-in, by turning an abusive and oppressive villain into a misunderstood hero, who only became evil after not getting everything she wanted, in order to excuse atrocious—including murderous—behavior.
I’m still waiting for the part where you tell me something I don’t know that refutes what I said. Wicked, the novel, is from 1995—less than a decade before the musical debuted—more than 75 years after Baum died. It very much IS the “attempt to warp” that I’m talking about.
Anybody's free to keep enjoying The Wizard of OZ. Wicked the Musical is based on Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire. Nobody will force you to see it ..unless you have daughters. There's a lot of 'reworking' of classics out there.
My husband and I saw Wicked in NYC in 2011, NOTHING political ever crossed my mind. But that was when the world was still sane. Having now seen the show on stage two more times and the movie just Sunday, the political messages came flying from the script. Nothing had changed except for Trump.
Maybe just go and enjoy it for what it is. We don't need to look too deeply at it ffs. My daughter and I went to see it yesterday for her birthday and thoroughly enjoyed it.
Except that the public felt economic issues and war crimes were most important and she thought she could win without their votes. Bluff called, but it wasn’t a bluff…
I went for the love of Wicked but I could NOT get this fact out of my head. It made Defying Gravity even more powerful (if that was possible). All hail Cynthia Erivo!
They can't make what they are doing work without slaves. Start looking into/forming our own militias and getting guns. The Black Panthers did it and we can do it too when they cross that line. Teeth is how we win when they come for us, not words sadly. Stay angry peeps!
Please please please, read/listen to the book! I'll admit, I'm a poop who can't get over the disappointment of when I learned there was a musical, saw it, and found one of my favorite novels stripped to dust with a good soundtrack. But there's SO MUCH MORE!!! All the more relevant now.
Well sometimes the obvious needs to be stated.
Because Americans as a whole don’t have a good comprehension of satire or critical humor.
This red area here for example( points to map) is notorious for its blank unknowing stares.
The whole "Wizard of Oz" story was a live letter about the Populist Party and its decline, at the end of the 1800s. The "Yellow Brick Road" was referring to the "Gold Standard." The "Wicked Witches" were the "Coastal Elites."
Every version of the Wizard of Oz is the story of a loser who conned the idiot citizens of Oz into giving him control of the Emerald City as Supreme Leader
Don't get me wrong, I love Idiocracy... But it is pretty eugenicsy. The actual problem with our world isn't that "stupid people breed more than smart people," it's that public education has been systematically dismantled, and social media is a powerful tool of manipulation.
Considering there a current trend in our nationwide youth and even older adults to refrain from relations and relationships, I feel eugenics play a part as well. The only ones still pairing and breeding are those not intelligent enough to realize how fucked we are.
Surprised to learn (whilst fact-checking my initial response to your comment) that there's such a thing as dysgenics, which you seem to be alluding to, somewhat jokingly. This appears to be a specious notion that's not scientifically verifiable, but I can appreciate what makes it seem plausible.
The person you're responding to blocked me for some reason, but dysgenics is the opposite of eugenics. It's essentially the theory that our genetic code is getting worse because we don't have natural selection killing off the unfit. It's pseudoscience at best, and actively genocidal at worst.

Even more so with Trump.

Not that I in any way want to hear any yodeling from the Felon in Chief or any of his followers.
Elfie is green- better than a giant orange peach 🍑
Dreadfully relevant.
My child has asked how a felon is trusted more than a woman. He is PROFOUNDLY angered with this.
I am IMMENSELY proud of him.

Trump, not so much. Are we the new banana republic?
Trump is the fuse that set off a cancer we've had in American society for a long as we've been a nation.
It's a generational challenge. A billionaire buying MSNBC or a good Dem politician won't fix it.
It's on us, the People, to heal our society. It's on you.
(Also, I need to stop making "green" jokes about Wicked.😅)
Now do Idiocracy!
Not to mention Kevin Stitt and “MAGA Mark” Wayne Mullins.
Spot on remarks about the root causes of the problem.
