It’s still possible to file the old-fashioned way (using paper forms and an envelope). The only expense involved is a postage stamp & some photocopies. But it’s a hassle, and of course the Trump junta wants to get rid of the USPS anyway.

As an example of the real free world. In my country most tax is collected automatically through salary, those who have variable incomes fill in a simple online form and the government tell you exactly how much tax to pay.

1. Of course tax prep corporations lobby the shit out of lawmakers to prevent IRS direct file. Their industry would be shattered if this program is successful.
2. The GOP absolutely does not want taxes to be easy to file. They need it to be a pain in the ass so people are outraged.

I used IRS Direct to file my taxes last year and it was incredibly easy and FREE. We're literally already paying taxes, why should we also have to pay just to file them?

Some of us Tax preparers can do them for free as long as they are personal taxes being filed. It's not complicated to do personal Taxes. Businesses is much more work than personal Taxes.

Well, it was a convenience anyway. Guess I will go back to printing out the forms, going to the web site, getting to the review screen, then filling out the forms from the information there, and exiting before they file it. Then mailing in the forms.
After emigrating from the US over two decades ago, I was absolutely shocked to find out I can file taxes here online, for free. Directly with the national tax authority. I had always hired a tax firm in the US. It also only takes me about 10-15 minutes to fill out my taxes, everything is electronic.
Well I don't know about you but I'm not paying any taxes after the 20th of January I'm claiming zero. We're not going to get anything back so why the f*** are we going to file anyway claim zero on your taxes people

This has long been the case. The only reason that there hasn't been a system in place for taxpayers to directly file their taxes with the IRS with no intermediary is due to those companies, and the IRS wanting their continuing help in reducing tax fraud (which, they have helped reduce by half).
Meanwhile, in other countries, they just send you a tax bill and you pay it. They already know what you owe or what they owe you. They just want you to make a mistake on the terribly complicated paperwork so they can charge a penalty
They already suppress it by hiding it on search engines if you search free tax return they just take you to a paid service anyways after you’re halfway through your process.
