I tend to leave YouTube running while I work. I’ve started following some accounts where English people restore Irish cottage & that evolved into Americans advising on living in Ireland. I must admit the latter can be a tad bizarre!

They try to do videos about culture shock & Irish traditions & behaviour & it’s fun to think who might have hoodwinked them into whatever it is that they are spouting about.
It struck me that few of them noticed hospitality traditions - mainly because, as Americans, most of them have already absorbed some Irish culture & not realised it.
For instance that if someone buys you a drink, you buy one back! This is one of those things you learn as a student in Uni in Dublin. You find some tourist lost, you adopt them, you bring them to a legendary pub & buy them a drink.
Americans & Brits buy one back. Some nationalities do not. In fact some, having read about Irish hospitality, are outraged if they go not get it. They don’t seem to realise it ends if it’s not reciprocated!
Loads of them went on about waving at buses & saying thank you to the driver. Which begs the question, do they not say thank you at home when someone provides a service!
Another theme was how expensive Dublin was, but outside of Dublin was cheaper! This might have been convincing but the ‘outside’ chosen was Enniskerry in one case & Howth in another - both of which are not cheaper!
Advice on waving for buses is needed. Where I live in the US they stop unless you give them a head shake not to. About half of riders give a thank you here. I think the fact that our buses don't give change is probably more of a culture shock coming here from there.
It makes sense. I’m glad you pointed this out. Now I don’t know if I should use it for sharing political pieces, my husband and YA kids aren’t on bsky ☀️
I agree with that. Good point!
At the same time I'm curious that you "leave YouTube running..." *while you work*!!

Of course, but so are the UK/US govts monitoring everything we do in Ireland; these ‘unroll’ things capture my artwork & are v problematic copyright-wise. I’ve blocked any that muppets add to my threads. Google’s Europe, Middle East & Africa HQ is in Dublin.
Don't let it autoplay too long or it'll get you to the point where you're watching Americans "roman salute" and say some pretty bizzare stuff about master races
Trust me, they’re not. It’s really just to me. Sort of like a car crash. You know you shouldn’t look, but you do. You certainly wouldn’t learn anything about Ireland. For instance none of them touched on the Irish tea drinking ceremony!
Yeah, I bet it can. I'm following at least one of the first set of accounts (English couple restoring a derelict Irish cottage), but haven't bothered with the latter ones. As a naturalised British immigrant here in Ireland, I had to find my own way. Nuff said.
I watch a fascinating one with two women & it’s interesting watching them adapt to Ireland. As the series goes on, they are more willing to accept help from neighbours. It’s clear at the start they don’t realise the offers are part of tradition, but they now seem to get it.
Aye. I watch one where a husband and wife from the Greater Manchester area, with two kids, are restoring what appears to be a derelict cottage/smallholding in Leitrim. They're wowed by the help and hospitality they've received too. I also understand the Brehon Laws included a section on hospitality.
I haven’t seen that one! I think to say ‘a section’ is a massive understatement. It goes into hospitality requirements, & fines for not doing so, at enormous length! I think you might enjoy these books from your local library:
