Audiophiles can be exhausting. I grew up in the generation that went from recording static music on the radio to cassette via boombox then the era of 96/128 kbps mp3s, I'm pretty grateful that CDs and stereo equipment are affordable these days
It doesn’t matter which sounds better because most music is listened to on streaming. I own physical media because I want to have a trophy of my fandom. Speaking of that, I’d really like to get Horrorscope in Vinyl.
You're damn right. That song fucks hard. I love the driving pace that gives way to a slow expansion (and I'm thinkin', while I'm thinkin'). I also love the vocal effect (get away, gotta get away). Someone once told me that effect comes from running the vocals through a guitar amp, but I don't know.
I mined my core beloved bands in the 80s and early 90s. (Yes, I’m old.) Couldn’t wait to get my vinyl faves on CDs for the medium’s perfect reproductions. Now, though, when I play my vinyls out of nostalgia, every pop and crack (all in every place I remember) are perfect, too.
Reformed LP snob. Fell for the convenience of tiny optical discs as opposed to big, scratchy LPs. Sold my last tube amp and play through a modeling rig. I'll happily settle for a good digital simulation of analog sound. Can't tell the difference any more.
CDs don’t sound as good as the early 2000’s releases of the short lived, ‘DVD Audio’ and ‘SACD’ formats. You haven’t lived until you’ve heard Everclear in 6.1 surround sound.
Amateur goblins up in this thread — fixed up a 1960’s solid state recorder and transferred music by means of monitor headphones at max over the microphone. Crunchiest bassmaxxed notes your virgin ears have never heard.
LOL!!! I had a beau who fell for everything. He would exclaim how wonderful CDs were. I just stuck with my tapes and vinyl. I put him to the curb. I think he's still there!
Perfect response.
If you’ve both read the book, then you likely aren’t having the conversation.
Otherwise, they don’t want to hear why this movie they’re watching now isn’t as great as the book they’ve never read.
It comes down to simple sound waves. CDs drop out part of the signal that vinyl captures. And don't get me started on MP3s which drop out even more of the signal to make the file as small as possible for quick downloads.
Vinyl is the best way to copy music except for FLAC files which are huge.
I hate to uhm actually but I can't take digital slander. In theory CD's are able to reproduce the same master in a way higher quality than vinyl. Modern adcs just have way better characteristics than any vinyl player can have. You might enjoy the sound that a vinyl recording might produce though.
As a DJ, selecting the best copy of the recording is what helped me gain an audience. I kept playing vinyl when others had gone to CDs. Now some DJs are going back to vinyl because it sounds better.
Scientists and engineers spent almost 100 years trying to solve all the limitations of vinyl for dull people to keep saying that sentence for the following 50 years
CDs were ROUGH sounding before engineers figured out how to master for that format. Tinny ass harsh shit. Everything was Merzbow with pop sensibilities
Honestly (at the risk of sounding like a complete hipster) I think this only applies to old vinyl. That crackle and distortion IS what makes vinyl sound special. The new pressings don’t have that vintage feeling and that kills it for me.
anyway everyone i know of who collects vinyl is like perpetually tortured & angry about it bc its so expensive, hard to store bc of space requirements, hard to protect, hard to listen to
A well-mastered CD is a thing of beauty. I bought a SACD of Thriller, an album I've heard a million times. I wasn't even playing the SACD layer and it was incredible.
Most people listen to music in mono and have no idea because it comes out of two speakers, and "dual mono" is an idea that they can't grasp. Excuse me while I listen to Howlin' Wolf on two speakers in "stereo"...
I think FLAC is lossless. Right? With near infinite storage space I might as well burn my CDs in the format. Excepting the fact that my car doesn't play FLAC.
I don't think I can detect any difference, though.
Yeah, it's objectively false, and still subjectively true. CDs have a wider range of sound, but the subtle imperfections of vinyl add something. I will always buy CDs over downloads.
Well, way back there was "I am afraid of clowns".
Currently, it seems to be " (whatever new Trump policy is mentioned) isn't going to reduce egg prices".
You could always get a bit more niche "well CDs don't sound as good as vinyl, but have you tried minidiscs?" Or just swap minidiscs out for any ye olde media form.
That is dreadful. It’s a bad approach considering it’s like saying “here’s a particular grain of sand you should care about” (we’re standing on a beach. It’s a touch subject with that as the opener.
"You referred to Wolverine as Logan, but he's actually James Howlett, except when he's not, and it's kind of a fun story so here's 18 paragraphs about it so you won't make that terrible mistake again..."

Take care.

I have a few CDs recorded on gold and they do sound almost like vinyl.
Your garden variety CD simply is not large enough. They have to drop out part of the signal to fit an entire album or leave off tracks.
“I was playing online poker and the flop comes out…”
I agree about the vinyl.
Nice to meet someone who can laugh :)
That may actually be a more boring sentence
I win.
"I think I might be eating a little too much bread recently."
I worked at record stores from 1984-2005 and no fucking way am I paying $35 or whatever for Rumours.
But true
Have thousands of both
I don't think I can detect any difference, though.
I can't hear you
