The left image is a big improvement and the lightning is consistent. You can tell they used two very different techbiques between the two images like you pointed out.

One of the best things you can do when you're rusty is look at a mix of inspirational sources. It helps build back the creative muscle along with practice.
Have you thought about expanding upon the sketch theme? What about moving to cross hatching? It's worth looking up other similar techniques.

Your new and old stuff look decently stylistic and the color pallet looks somewhat solid. There's plenty of lighting contrast, which is good.
It kind of sort of looks like your new pieces are rusty, but I don't believe it's as bad as you think. If you're concerned, try warm-up exercises.
