I dissect calendars in Books of Hours and keep a close eye on the Vatican Library, sometimes in that order. https://www.cokldb.org/ https://www.wiglaf.org/vatican/

Only 11 new #Manuscripts from the #Vatican this week www.wiglaf.org/vatican/2025... The bulk are from the archives of the Cappella Pontificia. Withs one more Diary and a 16th C Russian Evangilary completing the week's work #MedievalSky #Skystorians

Today’s hagiography/paleography puzzler comes from #Houghton 2020hem-84. This is the start of the calendar for June, the first entry reads “Nicomedis & p….” But I cannot quite figure out the second name. Can’t be petri (see June 2), can’t be Pauli (wrong a)….? #MedievalSky

48 more #Manuscripts digitized by the #Vatican www.wiglaf.org/vatican/2025... Includes a ton of Cappella Pontificia documents, some even about the Puntatore diaries in Capp.Sist.Diari, more Bussulas, Augustine on music, Ge'ez works and, topically, a Rule of St. Augustine #MedievalSky #Skystorians

Uninvolved in the #conclave, the #Vatican libraries digitized 58 #manuscripts www.wiglaf.org/vatican/2025... Including a counterfeit 14th C Dante, a ton of 19th C music, more Sistine Diaries, occult tests, travel guides, glossed classics, Persian poetry and more! #MedievalSky #Skystorians

No new pope yet, but the work digitizing continues with 28 new manuscripts last week www.wiglaf.org/vatican/2025... Includes a 14th C Codex of Justinian, two Bussulas, some polyphonic masses, Aesop, a Demosthenes translated by Bruni (autograph?) and more! #MedievalSky #Skystorians

There may not yet be a Pope, but the #Vatican is back to digitizing manuscripts this week. Among the recent additions is this odd volume with a work on theology, and another a Latin translation of Isaac Israeli's book on Urine! #MedievalSky digi.vatlib.it/view/MSS_Ott... (Ott.lat.1227 f.146v)

Probably due to Passover cooking, the #Vatican only digitized 27 #Manuscripts this week www.wiglaf.org/vatican/2025... Includes 2 italian Boethius', documents on Würzburg, 19th C liturgical music, a glossed Aeneid, some signed Humanist texts and more! #MedievalSky #Skystorians

A rare example of a 12th C (catalogue calls it, I think a bit earlier) punctus interrogativus, or question mark. The clause starts 2 lines from the bottom, on the right "Petre amas me?" #Vatican Barb.lat.541 f.2v #MedievalSky

Assigning a specific numeric value to each letter (see p. 2) and counting numerals as well, every line in this poem adds up to 666. 😈 (There's even a line later on that only consists of the name "Dobrowsky": 4+50+2+80+50+240+90+10+140=666 🤔) < gallica.bnf.fr/ark:/12148/b...

A quietish week, only 36 #Manuscripts from the Vatican www.wiglaf.org/vatican/2025... Includes a 13th C NT, 11th C Menologium, more 17th C papal stuff, Sistine Diaries and Ethiopic liturgy. Several humanistic texts, including one by one Raniero Fioravanti, unknown to me #MedievalSky #Skystorians

The Golden Light Sutra promises that during the reign of an immoral ruler, disasters will strike the realm, disease will spread, injustice will run rampant, and joy will disappear. (Gold ink on purple paper, 746 CE, Japan) #ManuscriptMonday colbase.nich.go.jp/collection_i...

A solid 63 #Manuscripts from the #Vatican this week www.wiglaf.org/vatican/2025... Includes some v old Kufic Quran leaves; several legal texts, some #neolatin works; more 17th C Papal texts, Ethiopic texts, Sistine diaries, and classics; a 12th C glossed Priscian and more! #MedievalSky #Skystorians

Seeing the standard form of address for a letter written out in full is surprisingly rare (Barb.lat.2166)

Due to the Annunciation(March 25) this week, only 12 #Manuscripts added by the #Vatican www.wiglaf.org/vatican/2025... includes a skinny Ovid, a redecorated Augustine, a 9th C MS, more 17th C papal stuff, 2 Ge'ez liturgical volumes and more! #Medievalsky #Skystorians

Only 22 #Manuscripts from the #Vatican this past week www.wiglaf.org/vatican/2025... Mostly 17th C Papal stuff and Ethiopic liturgy, but also a few 15th C copies of classical Latin authors #MedievalSky #Skystorians

Neither the final screen of my camera roll, nor the count of photos is really a surprise.

Last week the #Vatican added 85 #Manuscripts www.wiglaf.org/vatican/2025... They include more Sistine diaries and 17th C papal letters, a Martyrology/Rule in Bari-type Beneventan, a pile of Ge'ez liturgy, many Humanist classics, incl. Bruni translations, and more! #MedievalSky #Skystorians

Due to a busy weekend and a large number of manuscripts uploaded on friday, the weekly Vatican digitization report won't be out until tomorrow.

Does anyone recognize a “beati Eurici” listed in an Italian (possibly Sienese) calendar on June 10? #MedievalSky

Tiny #BookOfHours from the Houghton added today: 2020HEM-79. From later 15th C, Sienna?. A lovely MS, but rebound (17th C) and either then or later many leaves were removed. Some offices start in the middle, and folios have ink transfer from non-existent miniatures. www.cokldb.org/p/v100/ms/880 1/🧵

a reasonable 58 #Manuscripts from #Vatican this week www.wiglaf.org/vatican/2025... Still more 17th C Barberini vols, a herbarium, several 15th C classical volumes, a 12th C Ovid, large format liturgical music, more Ethiopic and _more_ #MedievalSky

@joshforboston.bsky.social remind me, which city's mayoral race is this again?

Sometimes correcting a scribal error just takes a few dots. Like this dittographed "ac potius" at the beginning of a lovely Humanist Ovid _Epistulae ad familiares_, #Vatican Vat.lat.11492 #Medievalsky

Forty #manuscripts from the #Vatican digitized in the past week www.wiglaf.org/vatican/2025... Includes a lot more 17th C Barberini stuff, 2 Sistine diaries, a 12th C Priscian, and several classical works. There were also 8 more Ge'ez MSS, which are now identified! #MedievalSky

Well I know what I’m doing tonight.

Today marks the 3rd anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. SUCHO has now made publicly available the 50 TB of cultural heritage data archived from websites ranging from national archives to local museums, 3D tours of churches to children’s art centers. www.sucho.org/press-releas...

Only 24 #Manuscripts this week from the #Vatican www.wiglaf.org/vatican/2025... Mostly 17th C stuff from the Barberini family, but also some Ethiopic, a few more Sistine diaries, post-Byzantine Greek and a Spanish commentary on Pope Paul II... #MedievalSky

Sometimes the absent is still quite visible. This is the recto and verso of the same leaf, and the recto from the following, from #Houghton 2020HEM-79, showing traces of what was once clearly a lovely miniature of the Host, entirely missing from the MS as seen today #MedievalSky
