Yeah, that’s a good point. There’s a removed(ish) way to analyze a work and then a fandom way to analyze a work where the guiding principle is you need to defend your love of a work because you’re enmeshed with it.

It’s so tame but apparently the discourse is rancid in the pop girlies community

Another one for the King Shu-Suen (you can use your imagination for this one):
"My God, that alewife: her beer is good!
Like her beer, her pussy is good (her beer is good!)
Like the mouth of a canal, her pussy is good (her beer is good!)
Her sprinkling water (her beer is good!)"

I’m just realizing that labeler went down. Is there another block list somewhere?
comment in response to

Yeah, people really need to do some introspection to figure out if their interpretation is coming from their own history or from what’s actually in the text.

She’s already muted for me by @skywitches.net’s Hate Enablers list, so this must not be the first time she’s stepped in shit.

the purpose of art education is not to teach children a “love of drawing,” it’s to teach a craft. the point of math education is not “love of math” it’s “can you calculate your total at the store” its CRAFT ITS CRAFT ITS CRAFT

Feels like it a bit. I think she’s making a distinction between analytical brain and fandom brain.

Yeah, the first go-round is never all that active, it’s just what my brain notices while I’m watching/reading. It notices the choice made by the creator then files it away for later.

Now, trying to look too closely at the plot and logic of a story, especially sci-fi or fantasy? Yes, that can be a joy-killer. Some plots aren’t meant to be read super closely.

If I don’t enjoy a work, I won’t spend time squeezing meaning out of it. If I do enjoy a work, and thinking deeply about it makes me enjoy it less, then… okay? That happens sometimes. I can choose to ignore it and continue vibing, or I can drop it. There are other works.

Perhaps this distinction I’m making, between enjoyment of a work and enjoyment of analyzing a work, is the same thing OP is saying. But it feels different, the emphasis is on something different.

I’ve seen people in the quotes saying this comic was tongue-in-cheek, like he was making fun of people who think blue curtains are just blue. I’ve gone to the source and I don’t really see justification for that explanation, though.

Things can be cool and also mean something

Even if the author doesn’t have thematic or allegorical intent, there should still be enough friction in the writing I can latch on to and fashion my own meaning out of.
comment in response to

There’s an author quoting this who is saying she wrote something where the thing was just the thing and didn’t mean anything allegorical.
I understand now why the only book of hers I’ve read was decently well-written at the prose level but ultimately boring and unchallenging.

if someone is boring? hit da bricks. someone repeating the same news or commentary you've heard from 10 other people in the same way? you can leave. it is not axiomatically good to follow anyone and everyone talking about politics, even if they're benign. make friends instead.

Thank you for this, and thanks for making a list and not a Starter Pack! So much easier to keep track of specific events when the posts aren’t lost in my Following feed.

It's very scared, inexperienced people trying to wish themselves into a scenario where they can stand up to fascism and also stay entirely respectable and tactically pure, which is the expectation being set by the leaders they choose to follow.

I just like to point that out as an additional benefit of using lists, because it’s not as widely known.

Or, you can add people via lists who can reply but are not in the follows/followers/mentions groups.
comment in response to
post
You can also limit replies by list. So if you want an even smaller number of people who can reply, just put them on a list and set that post (or all posts) to allow replies from people on specific lists.

I feel so much better limiting my posts to followers/follows/mentions.

Not that I have solid proof of this wrt The Substance in particular but it’s the American way so why wouldn’t it apply here too.

People also get uncomfortable when a movie makes them horny but it’s depicting a bad thing. They feel guilt about the horniness so they lash out at the film for making them confused.
