It's not a cognitive error it's misinformation. Vaccine adverse effects are a literal rounding error. Driving in a car is a hundred thousand times more dangerous than any vaccine. Public opinion is malleable and the NYT has played an outsized role in this issue.

🎓 Calling PhD students in North Carolina! BWF’s Graduate Diversity Enrichment Program (GDEP) offers up to $5,000 for students in biomedical sciences to support travel, training & more 🌟 Boost your career with flexible funding! 📅 Deadline: 07/07/25 🔗 Apply now: www.bwfund.org/funding-oppo...

"The NHGRI Communications Office, and with it the History of Genomics Program, was completely disbanded on April 2nd. My contractual position was finally terminated on April 28th." The first piece in our series "The Losses"

Grants at Columbia unfrozen at 9:30 this morning... Refrozen at 2:30 this afternoon with instructions to undo all of the releases done earlier. It like the 7th graders in detention broke into the Principal's Office...

And none of the reports say what is happening about back pay and benefits. The reports should at least say whether the question is being asked but has not yet been answered. That's a huge financial liability for the government and also a human interest question.

Over the past few weeks I’ve just about lost interest in pursuing an academic science career, so I’m trying to draw as much optimism from this as possible

🚨 BREAKING: Nearly 4 months the NIH cut its first grants, a judge has ruled that the directives and process that led to cuts are arbitrary and capricious. "The explanations are bereft of reasoning — virtually in their entirety... unsupported by [facts]." Each of them are VOID and ILLEGAL, he says.

It turns out giving immense social and political power to the greedy, selfish, lying, incompetent, parasitic start-up founder class was a big mistake!

My MOSAIC award on genetics of T2D would’ve uncovered additional molecular causes of the disease and helped discover new treatments, at a bargain of $1 million.

By my count at least six of the eight are documented anti-vaxxers or proponents of herd immunity (aka letting people die).

Can someone tell me why every MLB team uses Spoonman by Soundgarden as a stinger

I wrote about a personal belief of mine for @sequencermag.bsky.social: that life-extension people, and by extension a lot of biofuturists who promise the world but ultimately are just selling something, are hacks. Be a bioluddite instead. www.sequencermag.com/who-even-wan...

New NIH Notice rescinding the no DEI, no Israeli boycott term and condition added to NIH grants (covers the whole university) This is what Williams refused to sign and declined all federal funding. grants.nih.gov/grants/guide... 1/2

I feel like I am in bizarro world: what?! How are you supposed to be inspired to enter a workforce that is actively being dismantled?

HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHA THEY DID IT Y'ALL THEY DID IT

Are you an early-career researcher working on the computational analysis of population-level human genetics data? We want to hear from you about if, how, and why you use population descriptors in your research! Fill out our short survey: forms.gle/SCiNUq71wgi5... 🧬💻🧪

And now a bunch more weight dumped into the existential dread bucket... A PhD student just got an updated NOA terminating their F31 fellowship yesterday, May 29. The termination date??? FEBRUARY ELEVEN!!! It is terminated effective ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHT DAYS AGO... 😱🧟‍♂️ 🧪🧬💻

I don't think we all mean the same thing we say "elite" or "prestigious" college and I think that creates some real barriers in conversations across publics and helps create an environment where people think Michigan State has an acceptance rate of 15% (instead of the real one of 84% in recent data)

“You work so hard to put yourself in a position where you don’t have to worry, and then that’s taken away from you,” said Camila Valderrama-Martínez...She can get a job, but that “takes away time from my research and my time in lab and focusing on my studies and my thesis.” 🧪

A helpful backdoor that I’m absolutely sure a lot of NIH folks have been fighting tooth and nail for over the last few months. Grateful for the advocates But a moment to be petulant…why do I have to reapply for something I was already awarded

If we can't do the science showing harm of pollution, we can't protect people from it. "Virtually all of the air-quality standards that we have today are built around evidence from this exposure facility.” www.nature.com/articles/d41...

This EPA facility is located next door to my grad school lab building. I did countless exposure experiments for my PhD there (transported my cells in a box papered over with all my visitor badges). The decades of work performed in this building have made our lives better and safer.

there is an entire group of people whose response to college students accusing them of being bad people was to work very hard to elect a fascist to tear down all of American society the college students were right about them

note that 7 out of 10 listed here are training mechanisms

I wish science good luck with that “ignore the bullet and focus on the holster” approach to resistance.

Literally, all the early career funding opportunities are going away or being drastically reduced, and people are still saying “apply for more grants” to those whose grants were terminated 🤷🏾‍♀️

y'all we need to accept that fact that no, we are not going to be ok (scientifically/career). it's been over. idk how jr faculty are going to survive this. what we need are real pieces of advice on backup plans. i accept people don't have answers but just waiting to see what happens is not good

Just got news that @hhmi.org decided to not review Hanna Gray fellowship applications. I am sorry but that’s fucked up. People spent months working in those. So now you disadvantaged these candidates even more. They could have used the time to advance their research instead.

Heartbroken to hear that the @hhmi.org Hanna Grey fellowship competition is being cancelled this year. I poured so much work and creativity into this app and am very grateful for everyone who helped me revise. It is such a difficult time to be a young scientist.

Yesterday, the NIH R35 “Outstanding Investigator” grant to fund scientists in my lab studying antibiotic resistance was terminated for reasons not related to the content of the science, or any actions taken by me or members of my lab
