Pavlovian habit
tbh I think making brand deals is a stress response
Like “I’m feeling down, I’m anxious, time to go sell something”

The Duongs have definitely donated a lot of money, but the major difference between them and eg Phillip Dreyfus isn’t the amount of money they give (which I think is less than Dreyfus) but understanding of the loopholes that let you do it legally vs things like straw donors that are illegal

Black folks have always shown up for America...
It is America that finds difficulty showing up for Black folks

No one knew about the alleged corruption when the recall campaign started though!
I’m honestly skeptical of the Thao indictment because she didn’t do the things she was allegedly bribed to do. But we will see

Extremely naive to think the way Trump abuses power is separate from his racism. This is a man who first decided to fight the federal government *because* it dared censure him for racist housing practices.
His racism is not a side salad. It is very much central to his authoritarianism.

Mayor then invoked emergency powers to meet SFPD demands and end the strike
Mayor insists the bomb was “local wackjobs” but the timeline seems very clear to me

SFPD wanted a 13% raised b/c LAPD just got a raise and it hurt their feelings to not be the highest paid cops in CA
City approved 6.5% raise
SFPD went on (illegal) strike
City voted to have state police act as scabs
Bomb went off on mayor’s porch with note “don’t mess with us”

They do sometimes a little bit stick their heads out over in SF/Oakland
But the pattern has been that they then get punished pretty badly electorally for it (successfully recalled)
Do you have a specific form of federal cover in mind?

Looks like you were right, I must be thinking of another SFPD strike in the 70’s

I thought this was what “defund the police” was all about and why activists were so pissed when Harris and Biden countered with “fund the police”

I still can’t get over the fact that in the 70’s the SFPD bombed the mayor’s house because they wanted a bigger raise

Attendance proves to me that there is popular discontent even in a deep red East Texas city, and also Palestine is a solid part of the liberal zeitgeist now.

“I support public schools but I’m going to send my kid to a private school”
“I oppose racism but I’m going to move to a white flight suburb where it’s ‘safer’ and the schools are ‘better’”
You see it a lot in MA too

One of the very weird things about social media is the compression of tactical protest advice.
Mass grandma protest is a very different game than black bloc. Different protest styles call for not only different tactics but different INSTRUCTIONS to reflect that reality.

She’s so good and I’ve been really impressed by her successor Lateefah Simon
I get that that’s not everybody’s “The Democrats” but it’s mine!
