If a Democratic president cut off one of the red states dependent on federal funding, it would be a political scandal. But cutting off California -- the single biggest "donor state" in the nation, one that sends in to the fed'l gov't ~$80 billion more than it gets back -- is straight-up theft.

wtf.

a friend of mine shared this ai-generated "emotion wheel" and unfortunately i have been laughing my ass off at it for like 15 minutes now. today i am feeling Fnliinneon

say something nice about each other, a thing you say to literal toddlers

New: A DOGE staffer developed an AI tool to review Veterans Affairs contracts. But there was a slight hitch. It hallucinated the size of those deals. For example, it concluded that more than a thousand contracts were each worth $34M, when in fact some were for as little as $35,000.

“Researchers will need to develop a raft of new techniques to adjust to censored information environments. These include becoming more deliberate about search strategies, as the list of words banned by federal agencies works to obscure the many ways in which human life is lived.”

I know, it's just a given, but it's nonetheless remarkable that the majority of Congress has zero interest in this or any of the other instances in which recently-teenage freaks have been put in charge of federal government operations. Not even interested enough to post mild criticism. Zilch.

“Libraries are under attack,” said Brewster Kahle. At our Escaping the Memory Hole event, he made a passionate call to action for defending digital libraries amid cyberattacks, lawsuits, & censorship. 📚💿 🎞️📼🏛️ Full video ➡️ youtu.be/_L1VP8klL_g #MemoryHole #Preservation #InternetArchive

Thanks to Trump admin hiring freeze, we don't actually know the inflation rate anymore Bureau of Labor Statistics is short-staffed and simply can't gather enough data www.wsj.com/economy/cpi-...

“There he found a bunch of beer bottles and a prodigious amount of pot... Besides that, DOGE took over, had a big celebration on the night of the forced takeover. But after getting access to the computers and canceling all the contracts, they kind of lost interest...“

been saying this for like 3 years now, the core constituency of the "manosphere" is not Gen Z or teenage boys, it is 35-55 year old dudes who wish they were still teenage boys

This is what happens when you put internet conspiracy theorists in charge of major government departments.

“Just having an enviable job, while not being a straight white man, is grounds for suspicion – especially if you have the audacity to champion lifting others up the ladder.”

you have to be so unbelievably insecure about your own masculinity to think something like this let alone say it out loud

if you've ever wondered why -the administration keeps passing laws abusive to children -generations of christians have embraced authoritarians so fulsomely -US policy towards Israel is so weird -and more, look no further than MY BOOK bookshop.org/p/books/wild...

"Perhaps that’s the first thing we need to acknowledge to ourselves: nothing will feel like enough because everything we know and love is at stake. No individual’s actions will be commensurate with the threats we face. But we can each endeavor to do the next right thing, whatever that means for us."

They blame pollution but cut the EPA and clean air and water regulations. They blame poor nutrition but cut SNAP and programs to bring local produce to schools. They blame increased screen time while destroying public infrastructure that connects people. All while they take millions off healthcare.

I think this is the message. The big bad federal government and some strangers you don’t know probably not even your neighbors want to tell you what you can and can’t do and what your kids can and can’t do. Sounds like a nanny state to me.

"Understanding that the intention was to scare us, confuse us, and cause us to self-censor, my position [is a] commitment not to be scared. . . and not to self-censor. To avoid anticipatory compliance." -- Dilys Schoorman, Florida teacher educator interviewed by @csleeter.bsky.social #TeachTruth

“Since at least the 1920s, policymakers have been making the argument that tax cuts will partially pay for themselves,” said historian Joseph Thorndike. “The argument that cuts pay for themselves is not supportable, either in the economic literature or the historical literature.” on.ft.com/3ZqYj3a

What’s important is that government is getting out of business’ way and just letting the free market work again

I've never seen it so well put before.

Who wants to do this with me?

Peggy Frank loves old research books, especially ones about history. But they aren't always available through her local library collection in suburban Naperville, Illinois, where she's lived for the past 45 years.

It is genuinely so hard to fight against people who have no compunction or shame about lying. They just lie! And then the rest of us have to both debunk the lie AND make the counterargument. It's exhausting and stupid and also so effective, it makes me feel like I'm losing my M I N D

You see it right?!

Discworld QOTD, from Equal Rites “She knew a cutting, incisive, withering and above all a self-evident answer existed. It was just that, to her extreme annoyance, she couldn't quite bring it to mind.”

there are two big reasons behind the fact that all GOP policymaking is now through executive fiat one is that they're fascists who long for a king to rule them with an iron fist the other is that they suck absolute shit at legislating

"The NEH’s entire budget is about $200 million — less than what the Department of Defense spends every six hours. And yet its reach touches towns that rarely see federal investment in education and culture."

“This vote affirms that the State of Connecticut is no longer willing to be handcuffed by Big Publishing’s unfair pricing for digital content." --Ellen Paul, ED of the Connecticut Library Consortium WE LOVE TO SEE IT.

Trump to UAE president: "We have a term 'groceries.' It's an old term but it means basically what you're buying, food, it's a pretty accurate term but it's an old fashioned sound but groceries are down."

Please check in with your fed friends. It's kinda stressful here You’re fired You’re rehired You’re refired You’re staying but your team is fired Your team is staying but your funding’s cut You’re moving across the country, maybe Restraining order 🛑 Restraining order against the restraining order 🔙

NEW: A federal judge in Denver has rejected a delay in My Pillow Guy Mike Lindell's election denial defamation trial. Lindell's attorneys asked for more time as they face potential sanctions for submitting an AI-generated brief full of make-believe nonsense. #copolitics

how much of the DOGE-driven destruction of the nation’s research and development capacity is because these people are AI cultists who believe that we’re on the verge of creating a sentient general intelligence?

given the overwhelming number of targets with the trump administration and the republican majority in congress, it is actually bonkers to think that democrats have anything to gain from litigating biden. let the guy disappear and focus on the stuff that is unpopular with voters!

It remains unclear what exactly the administration means by “returning emergency management to the states” but the last time states were completely on their own with disasters was December 1802.

For 225 years, the Library of Congress has collected America’s stories and kept Congress informed. The American Library Association stands with America’s library.

Everyday regular-folks Democrats totally get it. Why can't the electeds?

If you sat down a random panel of Americans and told them what Republicans are currently doing, my guess is that the vast majority simply wouldn't believe you. It comes off like you're describing a Bond villain. The reality sounds wildly different & more extreme than what they hear organically.

Drug fatalities in the U.S. fell by about 30,000 last year, the CDC reported, a drop of nearly 27%.
