Yeah but we're all having nervous breakdowns together and there's something kind of beautiful about that

Anyway, I'm done. You're not going to change your mind, and trans and gender-diverse people get to live a little bit safer. The end.

It's a bad argument. Why have anti-racism laws if it could just be chalked up to "harassment"? Because the severity, impact, and threshold is unique. And as a queer family that deals with this shit every day, this isn't a "fun thought experiment". These laws help a targeted marginalized group.

Especially since this is one of the classes rapidly losing their rights elsewhere.

Because "common sense" doesn't work. There are people who consider malicious misgendering as their moral duty. This clarifies, not obfuscates. All your arguments could be used against any protected class -- it's shitty that you seem chill with the others, but this class is "too far"

Actually I'm tired and it turns out I don't really want to debate my rights tonight
Let's all just take the evening off

It's funny because historically the devil has done really well without needing extra people to advocate for him

Actually, let's back up, because it feels like there's a fundamental disconnect: if an employer refuses to hire a trans person, or maliciously misgenders them, SHOULD the victim have legal recourse?

It feels like you're advocating for anti-discrimination legislation without defining what legally counts as discrimination. Obviously, not every disagreement is discrimination, or harassment. Or do you think there are just too many protected classes now?

This doesn't target random people who accidentally misgender someone. It explicitly targets people in positions of power who refuse to correctly gender someone.

Other provinces have already been through this -- misgendering someone isn't a crime, and never will be. But persistently using the wrong pronouns for someone, when you know what the right ones are, and you've been repeatedly corrected, is hateful and discriminatory. And you know the difference.

Nintendo always has this constant whiplash between "this is the most polished thing I've ever seen" and "this highly-visible low-hanging fruit didn't even get ten seconds of polish"

One of the things that weirded me out when I first moved to Vancouver was how no one just...has people over. If you suggest to friends that you just hang out at your place, everyone looks at you like you're an alien. Took some getting used to.

Ha, I actually wrote that first "leaving Vancouver" article that ended up getting republished everywhere. It was mostly about Vancouver's lack of childcare pushing new parents out... which is still a huge problem a decade later. I did end up moving back here, though. Time for an insufferable sequel?
