Np. Agreed that it's a tough subject, but animal study-based research has almost certainly saved millions of lives (human AND animal). I don't think anyone working with these animals takes their sacrifices lightly. hms.harvard.edu/research/ani...

I have 5 cats. I love cats. I draw the line on medical ethics at the virtue of the goal and the methods taken to limit harm. I think this study is virtuous and is designed to limit harm.

"These results have significant implications for developing a new neuromodulation device to restore defecation function in humans after [Spinal Cord Injury]" Seems important. The cats were anesthetized during the procedure and then euthanized. This is science.

Stipulating that the toxicity concern is accurate...Keycards? Bluetooth? Smart lock? There are plenty of 21st century solutions to this problem. I haven't had a car key for years.

Dogs should not be used in force situations. It’s cruel to the dog and to suspects. Did the cops kill their own K9?

We’re not paying for Starship development. We’re paying a fixed cost of $2.89B for the Artemis lander. SpaceX gets paid the same with 10 tries or 100. We pay based on made milestones.
