I’ve seen it. When Sophie is done I’ll do Hans. Then I’m moving on to Stormé DeLarverie and Marsha P. Johnson from the Stonewall uprising. As artists we should always speak truth to power. I want to remind people that we all can resist.

Once the trees get done it’s not so bad but spring is miserable.

As an artist I’m using my art to focus on people through history who have resisted. My first portrait is Sophie Scholl. She, her brother Hans and a group of friends created leaflets of the White Rose urging Germans to resist the Nazis. They were executed. Work in progress.

Again I’m reminded of Big Daddy Roth’s brilliance. Bravo.

They were all executed. For the RESIST series I’ll be using black tissue paper for the backgrounds instead of brightly colored images. I will also be adding quotes from the leaflets and perhaps from Han’s and Sophie’s journals and letters.

When I was an active duty Marine we were actually required to wear makeup. In our dress uniforms our lipstick had to be the same shade of red as the trim on our hat thus preventing disagreements about red.

You know how reluctant I am to call anyone a Nazi but in the case of Milker, he’s a Nazi.

As a female Marine Corps veteran from the post Vietnam era I watched how female troops were empowered during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Commands recognizing and building on their ability to interact with civilian women made everyone safer. It also made me proud.

I spent 6 years away from my easel during the first Trump presidency and Covid. My daughter gave me a push that got me back to my art. It’s hard but you can do it.

These are 24” x 36”. I do use an art projector to transfer the photo I’m working from onto my canvas. At that point I just basically think of the paper like paint. Using text and patterns along with color makes it more interesting.

My uncle was advised in the 1950s to institutionalize my cousins. My aunt and uncle refused. They had all kinds of animals because Bruce would talk about them. As an adult he worked at a petting zoo. He not only cared for the animals he made presentations to the children.

Anyone who cones for my autistic grandson will have a very pissed off old Marine to deal with.

Not all were institutionalized. Back in the day, “he’s a little different but holy smokes he can fix anything”. Communities let people find their place and having known other families for generations they accepted those we might call high functioning.
