The beautiful new community room at the Halifax Common swimming pool also happens to be an amazing Covid-safer venue, at least in the warmer months. It has a giant glass wall that slides open, making the room a quasi-outdoor space shielded from rain by the roof overhang.

Things that make me most pessimistic about urbanism in North America: 1. Gov’t attempts to pause/remove bike infrastructure (TO, HFX, Edmonton) 2. Building code hostility to family-friendly dense housing 3. Transit construction costs 4. Urban NIMBYism making walkable neighbourhoods more exclusive

Wearing my @tomflood.bsky.social T-shirt until 9 am Tuesday. #bikehfx

Just sent my email to all HRM councilors asking them to vote against Andy's anti-active transportation motion. docs.google.com/document/d/1...

I don’t think people should have to share their personal stories to get elected officials to do the right thing, but I am open about my experience because I think it’s not widely understood how bikes are mobility aids. Here’s my letter to council about the mayor’s motion to stop bike lane progress.

We want to get in touch with companies that win bike lane contracts in Halifax. If anyone has contacts in business development at Dexter, Ocean Contractors, DesignPoint, Englobe, Parsons Corporation, WSP, Colliers, or others please DM. #BikeHfx

Absolutely wild how extremely far right rhetoric on Covid/disabled people, that liberals and leftists rightly attacked MAGA for in 2020, has now been mainstreamed to the point that leftists/liberals are further right on public health than most MAGA people were in 2020. Julia outlines it well here

Councillor Kathryn Morse denounces Mayor Fillmore's "anti-active transportation motion" 🚲 #BikeHfx

Jesus Christ this makes me mad. Please consider writing to your #Halifax councillor if you think it would be totally asinine to halt our cycling infrastructure plans just as we're starting to make a little progress.

I remember all too well when Andy Fillmore (Halifax MP at the time) biked around the waterfront for this announcement in 2019. How the times have changed. www.saltwire.com/nova-scotia/...

I wasn't expecting to drop everything to write this update today. Mayor Fillmore is putting forward a motion that could kill or drastically reduce the Regional Centre Bike Network. It's problematic, reckless, and lacking in evidence. My take here samaustin.ca/the-bike-net...

People in Halifax: send a quick email to the mayor and council at this address expressing your support for bike lanes (and opposition to pausing construction/design of bike lanes) by Monday.

response from my councillor who will oppose this: "It would be helpful if you and your allies could forward emails supporting bike lanes/multi-use trails to Mayor and Council via the Clerk’s Office at [email protected] today and Monday" please do so.

love to fix traffic in the city by continuing to actively making it harder to get around the city in anything other than a personal vehicle 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄

I don’t even bike in this city, and I’m big mad about this. The cost won’t get less by delaying. The bike lanes don’t seem to be holding up traffic where I’ve driven. Bikes connect people to transit options so they can go further, faster. You can’t achieve systemic change this way.

Mayor Fillmore's vision of an inclusive and equitable city is one where everyone gets to be stuck in the same traffic jam, breathing the same fumes, making the same car payments 🌞

I am furious. You should be too. Our mayor is using lies to bankrupt the city, increase your cost of living, and needlessly kill Haligonians. Demand better. Email your politicians. Show up and speak at council. If there's no public participation section, yell and disrupt the meeting one at a time.

Halisky, whether you ride a bike or don’t but still support bike lanes, come and show up at city hall on Tuesday & lend your support if you can.

Mayor Andy Fillmore states that he will introduce a motion next Tuesday to halt construction of new bike lanes #BikeHfx

“No one bikes in this city”, meanwhile the morning commute on Vernon:

Here in Vancouver we talk about Shaughnessy a lot, where a giant chunk of central land minutes from downtown, is reserved for $5M+ mansions. But the problem is actually a whole lot worse and widespread.

Jonathan Joss was MURDERED. Words matter here. He was MURDERED. it was a HATE CRIME because he is a gay Indigenous man. Say those words. Do not dance around it. He wasn't "killed in a shooting." He was murdered in a hate crime.

I talked to 15 teachers/professors about how AI and ChatGPT is ruining their lives: www.404media.co/teachers-are...

Oak Street, like most local street bikeways in Halifax, is so disappointing. Nothing has been done to restrict short-cutting drivers, like the guy in the camo pickup truck who nearly right-hooked me today. #BikeHfx

Important reading. We need to check our assumptions and affirm our commitment to supporting folks with disabilities. Eugenic attitudes are on the rise.
