I'm in charge most of the time so it's usually the easy one, but occasionally "the witch" insists that we express very femme (makeup, heels, actually trying to sound femme, etc), and that takes effort. I always like the result, but most of the time I'm content to be low effort

yes you can use a semicolon or parentheses in place of an em-dash in most instances, but there are some instances where the em-dash really is the most appropriate mark
