“In the 2000s, Pete Thamel showing up on your beat was like Jim Cantore coming to your town for The Weather Channel. You knew it wasn’t good.” A look back at when I was part of an Ed Axelby situation this week at Sports Media Guy: sportsmediaguy.substack.com/p/when-i-was...

"The ultimate aim is to keep readers on the site — instead of having them shift to social media platforms like X and Facebook to have a conversation about a story." It has nothing to do with good journalism or accuracy, or fairness to sources interviewed.

The path for Democrats is very clear: have good ideas, believe in them, state them clearly, stick to them, act decisively in support of these ideas, speak to the young half of the electorate, support other democrats who do these things. Follow Mamdani and Lander's example or fade into nothingness.

what’s funny is that if pro-cuomo centrist democrats were less myopic they might see that mamdani was running the kind of campaign that could help rebuild the party brand — accessible with an outsider persona and a focus on “kitchen table” issues.

Growing up in Buffalo in the late 1980s/early 1990s, Alexander Mogilny was everything. He was a comet. That 1992 team with Pat LaFontaine was magical. It's about time he's in the Hockey HOF.

Updated because I forget The Muppets.

AOC from the top rope 🔥….grandpa is gonna love that last part

I did the movie thing. When in reality, my list is "Spider-Verse, Big Hero 6 and a lot of other stuff ..."

If you’ve seen the relevant documentaries, you’ll know why I mention: The guys who were 22 at Woodstock ‘99 are 48 now.

Bluesky will be the social network to solve the "Is Joe Flacco Elite?" discourse.

We need a place to talk about the issues of the day, and that place can also be one where we marvel at Josh Allen Jumping Over Things.

Well-meaning folks on Bluesky who dismiss sportsball as some kind of distraction to What Matters Now are missing a key point in creating an alternative to X: Sports for better or worse dominates American culture. You ignore enormous swaths of potential allies when you dismiss sports.

Some people get into journalism because they’re skeptical of power, and others do so because they’re impressed by it. Moments like this are clarifying with respect to who’s who.

This is a regime, not a government or an administration. Language matters. Start calling it what it is.

Keeping in mind the advice I give my students: It’s OK to log off. The truth takes time. Lies are fast and fill that vacuum. Psychologically, we believe what we hear first. So give yourself space and time. Then, you’ll be more likely to have the first thing you hear be closer to the truth.

May every single human being on this planet be safe. May every single person be protected from harm. May we bring into being a time in which we are all free from those who do evil— together, speedily and in our days.

When I was in the newspaper industry, this was the approximate circulation of the Post-Standard in Syracuse. This is staggering.

"Was it really this dumb in 2003" guys they renamed french fries

If you’d like to read more of that history, I can’t recommend the book “Stealing Home: Los Angeles, the Dodgers, and the Lives Caught in Between” by @ericnus.bsky.social strongly enough.

"Here’s the question:" "If we don’t teach our kids how to use AI, who will?" "That’s a powerful question." Dammit. That's a good point, and something we need to figure out.

a guy who actually could do "the joe rogan of the left" - a guy who could become a huge media star with a big audience - is barack obama. that would require him actually discussing politics and current events as one of the main topics of the show, not shooting the shit with bruce springsteen

Trans kids deserve to THRIVE.

The repression of trans people is not, by and large, a grassroots outpouring of hatred from the American people. It's something that's been carefully planted and tended over years by a handful of media people and their pet reporters.

You want to throw AI into the sun. I want to throw AI into the sun. But there’s one question I can’t shake that keeps me from doing so. I riff on that question at Sports Media Guy (with cameos from @older.bsky.social and @davekarpf.bsky.social) sportsmediaguy.substack.com/p/the-questi...
