Gannett is using AI technology to create a daily story that is filled with ads for sports gambling. I riff on that truly cursed sentence over at Sports Media Guy. Thanks to @mharrisondupre.bsky.social for the interview that inspired this post: sportsmediaguy.substack.com/p/the-uncann...

For @nytimes.com, I wrote about Zombie Arguments, issues that many of us thought were long settled decades ago--from Pete Rose to abortion to "Cats"--but simply refuse to die.

Come and Get Your Love, Charlie Brown.

"This post is about how Gannett is using AI to create a webpage dedicated to sports betting. If that’s not a cursed sentence, I don’t know what is." @bmoritz99.bsky.social with another great look at sports media and sports in general.

This is beyond cursed

A great piece by @bmoritz99.bsky.social on why Gannett’s automated daily sports betting articles feel so strange/cursed/uncanny!

Trump feeds the content mills and benefits from even negative coverage. He gets to look engaged and appeals to this base when commentators object to stuff. And the political media gets new material to write about. Access benefits sources as much as reporters.

I look forward to the robust increase in funding and investment in CTE programs in our public schools that will allow this to happen ...

When we say access matters, this is one of the reasons why. Reporters like it when you talk to them, and when you don't, they feel like they have license to criticize.

The "Bluesky is dying" discourse seems to ignore one key thing. Twitter was AWFUL for a very long time. Like, even before Elon bought it. People have memory holed this, but it was often very bad.

Arrested Development narrator voice: "He did not use the money to fund vocational schools."

Memorial Day kicks off two of my favorite seasons: Grateful Dead Season (specifically 1971, 77-80, as 73-75 are reserved for Labor Day through Halloween) + Grilling Season So I ask today, you reply or quote with pics of your grilling and/or favorite Dead cuts!

There’s no way this just doesn’t become an AI thing.

It's not that Biden's decline while in office, and the effort to hide it, isn't a story. It's just that the guy *currently* in office is also in serious decline, dangerously so, and was even before he was elected, and there oddly doesn't seem to be the same fervor to cover that story.

Like you, this has been making me shout-at-the-screen angry I think there's a media sociology explanation partially at play here. I think it has to do with access to sources - but not like you think. A short thread:

New episode of The Other 51 is live with @williamfleitch.bsky.social. We talk all about his excellent new book, Lloyd McNeil's Last Ride. Will is awesome and this was so much fun. Get it here or Spotify or wherever. podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/t...

On one hand, the news is another example that everyone watches women's sports, and that level of investment is a good thing. However. Has ANYTHING ever been improved by bringing private equity in?

When I interviewed KKK leaders in Arkansas, this is what they said too. “We don’t hate anyone. We just love our own people.” Then they burned a cross.

"All told, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates 8.6 million fewer people would have health care coverage and 3 million less people a month would have SNAP food stamps benefits with the proposed changes." Cool. Coolcoolcool.

Wesley Lowery rose to prominence as a reporter and media thinker. Women in journalism say he engaged in sexual harassment and assault. www.cjr.org/feature-2/we...

That episode of @pablo.show out about Bill Belichick and Jordon Hudson did more than break news. It suggests an approach to journalism that lets us rethink how to tell stories. It also reminded me of the first season of Serial. New at Sports Media Guy: sportsmediaguy.substack.com/p/you-guys-a...

New episode of The Other 51 drops tomorrow! @williamfleitch.bsky.social joins me to talk about his truly excellent new novel, "Lloyd McNeil's Last Stand." Subscribe now to get the episode first thing: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/t...

All the Dems looking for “the next Joe Rogan” are missing the forest for the trees which is finding someone who can craft a story with the audience and take them on a journey. That’s it

Unironically they should buy up the domains for about 60 defunct local newspapers in swing states. Hire two reporters to write almost exclusively about highschool sports and new restaurants opening with every 10th article about how the local GOP is screwing over people.

What I will never understand about the AI evangelists is, like, what are you doing with your life if you're not doing these things? If you're not planning your kid's birthday party and a family vacation, what are you doing? That IS your life, folks!

"What holds society together is the idea that we are all in this together. Public education the greatest expression of that." New York friends, remember to vote for your local school budget and for school board today! (Fairport, polls are open at JP Middle School until 9 p.m.)

This book is truly excellent. It's funny, it's poignant, but most importantly, it is FUN! (You can hear all about it on The Other 51 later this week please like and subscribe). Congrats @williamfleitch.bsky.social, who remains the writer I want to be when I grow up.

Sure, let’s dissect the mental and physical acuity of the former president who sought to make lives in America better while minimizing the reality of a deranged arsonist dismantling the country we’ve known and loved. What a failure to meet this moment.

Honored to serve as the Jandoli School’s graduate Marshall today and to celebrate our third graduating cohort of journalism grad students.

My god that headline is a cursed sentence.

its genuinely insane to see the press on a "democrats must self flagellate over biden being old" when this shit is happening

I don't think we can fight AI creep by weaponizing grades. Nobody learns anything if we decide our job is to be plagiarism mall cops. If we don't win this argument at the level of process, convincing students they CAN'T learn what we have to teach them if they outsource to AI, we won't win at all.

Taking time this week to say thank you to my grad school advisor, mentor and friend Dr. Carol Liebler to celebrate her retirement. I wouldn't be writing this newsletter or have the career I do without her. sportsmediaguy.substack.com/p/thank-you-...

the thing thing about the admonition to “not take the bait” is that while it makes sense in the context of an election — where you are trying to communicate a narrow set of ideas broadly — it does not make sense in the context of “how do we make this president as unpopular as possible”
