Pro-Tip from the front lines of a Red Cross Disaster Relief Operation: When you're on the phone with DRO leadership, be sure to slam your shin as hard as is physically and humanely possible into a table. The sudden expletive you'll reflexively yell will really add some pizzazz to the conversation!

So sorry — was it women that are too emotional to lead? Just wanted to clarify that for everyone.

What do you do when you're the Red Cross liaison to a major community partner in the middle of the disaster damage area, and an emergency tornado warning comes through to a building filled with those traumatized by the worst tornado in decades? You do your best.

Today I confirmed that the duplex at the center of the US Supreme Court case Shelley v. Kraemer (1948), which ruled the enforcement of racial covenant deeds to be unconstitutional, is within the Red Cross disaster perimeter. 😞

As I enter week three of my disaster deployment with the American Red Cross as one of the only "hyper-locals" permitted to serve this mission in St. Louis, I have found continuous reassurance and guidance in the @americanhumanist.bsky.social Ten Commitments — rediscovering myself in the process.

In Missouri, overturning the will of voters has almost become the legislature’s main business. Lawmakers wasted no time moving to undo a constitutional amendment that legalized abortion up to fetal viability. By @jeremykohler.bsky.social‬

WashU STL, seeing an opportunity for another baby tooth study:

It's my rest day on this Red Cross disaster relief operation, and my self-care plan is to wear as little clothing as possible, play Kate Bush as loud as my Midwestern manners will permit, and to read as much of the Princeton Guide to Historical Research as my eyes can handle.

It turns out that I had a second cousin up in Chicago who recently passed. He was the son of my great uncle Edward, an academic and Ethicist here in St. Louis. I would've liked Ed and Jack quite a bit, but alas, fate isn't always in our favor. STTL cousin Jack! I'll know you through your writing.

Before I head back to my Red Cross post, I wanted to share three of the Ten Commitments of the @americanhumanist.bsky.social Association. Perhaps they will bring you the grounding they continue to bring me as we navigate this disaster. americanhumanistcenterforeducation.org/ten-commitme...

So apparently AI-voiced phone scams are a thing now. Joy of all joys.

As was suspected a few days ago but possibly ignored, the #stl Fire Dept siren button does not work. - Michael Kelley (Kelley Group) and John Hancock should stop attacking and defaming Sarah at CEMA. The mayor should focus on recovery. I’m asking for an on-air apology from Hancock on KMOX @audacy

Angie Craig: "I have no idea why we think it's a good idea to repeal a tax on silencers when we are going to feed fewer children in our country as a result of this. It's a moral damn failure is what it is."

Some of the CDC's main channels for communicating urgent health information to the public have gone silent.

My painting CLOUD TOPS

From bib to babe*. Got a field promotion to Acting Shelter Manager at our main Red Cross shelter here in STL, so I finally got my vest! Got to meet Batman, too. The community response has been nothing short of incredible; that's how we do in the Lou. *Babe not included. Sunburn very much included.

Adding coordinating with CNN to my volunteer experience!

Saturdays are for service. Let's build some community, St. Louis!

Those accused of housing discrimination “know that we don’t have those resources anymore,” one HUD official said. “They also feel emboldened that this administration will not consider the things that they are doing to be illegal.” By @jessecoburn.bsky.social‬

You know what I love about St. Louis? Knowing that we're going to bounce back from this as a stronger community.

Pittsburgh—unlike many other US cities—provides homeless people "credible offers" for long-term housing before sweeping encampments, rather than kicking people out & placing them in emergency shelters, which are often dangerous & inadequate. It's an interesting program other cities might consider:

The Martin Luther King Jr. statue lies on the ground after being blown off of its pedestal in Fountain Park after likely tornado hits St. Louis on Friday, May 16, 2025.

Got an idea of where we could use that Rams money in the short term. And no, I don't mean forest park.

NEW: Four people are confirmed dead and others are injured after severe thunderstorms and a tornado hit the St. Louis region Friday.

If you see downed power lines, call Ameren (1-800-552-7583). If you smell gas, call Spire (1-800-887-4173). For downed trees and debris, contact the Citizen Service Bureau (314-622-4800). The Red Cross (1-800-733-2767) is working to establish shelters for those who need it.

Unbelievable video on the Hudson building at Pershing and DeBaliviere. #stlwx
