Oh, well, Dreadful's launch party had its own set of ridiculous cakes I made

For the cake, I used sallysbakingaddiction.com/funfetti-lay.... The jam is thereaderskitchen.com/simple-small... (note that this is a pectin-free jam, so it's a little runny) I didn't make the fondant (gold) and gum paste (white) from scratch - it's prebought. But the video shows how to assemble.

I like the moisture retention crystals - I get a little more time between waterings.

I like couscous salads - you can make a batch of couscous and then mix in a bunch of chopped up veggies and protein of your choice with a very simple dressing (a little olive oil and either vinegar or citrus juice)? And then eat it chilled - I find the coolness and the acidity nice in the heat.

See, I'm an urban gardener - I've got a limited amount of room to play with, so I do have to make some hard choices since I can't just take home everything that looks pretty.

And I am doing my best to keep them alive - I mean, I'm paying attention to stuff like drainage and sun and all. I'm just not putting ten white impatiens in a clump next to an artfully arranged selection of Knockout roses. I'm currently working on a mass of bee balm, goldenrod, and sea holly.

I'm also a little ridiculously proud of the video - it came out really well given that I don't have all the fancy lighting and stuff you're supposed to use for food photography!

My mom called my gardening style "chaos gardening" - I don't really do blocks of color or grouped plantings or anything. I pick a bunch of random, mostly native, stuff that calls to me at the garden center and shove it in. When something dies, that means I get a new plant!

Delights AND horrors!

One of my recent supporting characters' main motivation in helping the protagonist is that she went on adventures when she was a teen, and now that she's got a kid and a demanding job, she's nostalgic and wants in on adventures again.

I tend to try to compare stuff in other tools, but book directly - I'd rather pay a little more and not have a third party involved, because it's easier to get things rearranged in emergencies when it's booked directly.

Except that EWR is a raging trashfire right now, and also depending on how close your destination is to a United hub, sometimes going through LGA is the difference between a direct flight and two connections...

It's this for EVERY industry. Oh, it lets you stop hiring the junior coders/lawyers/marketers/analysts/whatevers? Oh, this will only replace the churn and burn writers and artists and designers? But you still need experienced people to direct the actual output? Where do you expect to get them from?

Ok, so this one involves a 59min layover, which might not be enough time but this one has a three and a half hour layover which is longer than the event I'm traveling for, and this one is $70 more expensive only it's at the airport that will take an hour and a half and $60 more to get to...

How do you know? As we just said, the wood didn't leave an archaeological record! Maybe they had a loop to rival Action Park's wet (pun intended) dreams. Human sacrifice via waterslide!

We also signed a ton of stock of GRIMOIRE, DREADFUL, and Sarah's delightful THE SPELLSHOP, so if you're looking for signed copies, make sure to stop by!

I was joined by the lovely best selling author @sarahbethdurst.bsky.social for an evening talking about eyebrow-raising PTA politics, unruly moat squid, and Sarah's quest for a decent honey cake recipe.
