Right yes this is the same problem as with ring species (just across time instead of geography)
comment in response to post
like that hypothetical “first modern chicken” was clearly capable of sexually reproducing with its proto-chicken cohorts. So that notion of species has the problem of trying to define a transitive closure on a non-transitive operation (“can produce fertile offspring with”)
comment in response to post
lol yeah that’s exactly it. I think the most common colloquial definition of a species (what I learned in high school biology) is like “the largest group of organisms that are capable of producing fertile offspring”) but like that’s clearly problematic here..
comment in response to post
Turns out what constitutes a “species” is notoriously difficult to nail down!

They’re slow to access of course, but they’re pretty perfect for long term cold storage. Maybe they were being used inappropriately but cool me… skeptical both of the claimed savings and that the replacement is a good idea.

“You claim to want nuclear disarmament and yet you have nukes” YES THATS WHY I WANT DISARMAMENT Some would say that one of the key roles of the state is resolving dilemmas such as this

All people have inherent dignity as human beings and should be respected and accommodated as far as we reasonably can as a society. And also that does not extend to giving a guy whose brain looks like a fishing net the nuclear football.

Generally I prefer Thai to Japanese food as well. There’s obviously a lot I haven’t experienced, but broadly speaking my favorite east Asian cuisine is indo-chinese
comment in response to post
Honestly my intent here wasn’t to dunk on Japanese food, I like Japanese food and British food (both the more expansive and more narrow definitions of each). Or at least, there’s stuff from both cuisines I like.
comment in response to post
If what people mean when they say this refers to salinity, the critique really doesn’t apply to British food either imo
comment in response to post
You’ve identified another point I find somewhat frustrating with this type of discourse because it’s really not clear to me what people mean when they say this either. As I’m using it I’m really just approximating something like “boldness of flavor”
comment in response to post
You might point to ramen as a counterexample but I think the same logic that leads people to implicitly exclude British curries from the category of “British food” (which they must do to call British food bland) would also require them to exclude ramen due to its Chinese origins

Your daily reminder that there is no such thing as a singular “will of the people” much less one that can be invested in a single person

Oh. Right.

Yes actually my first exposure to this claim was a TikTok that said this. It’s silly for a number of reasons. ISO 8601 has no epoch anyway (rather the 2004 version of the standard had some flavor text about the Meter Convention being a reference date for the Gregorian calendar)

Thanks for finding this!

There does not seem to be a singlular standard across all implementations of COBOL (pre Y2K sometimes used YYMMDD) but e.g. modern IBM documentation details INTEGER-OF-DATE and DATE-OF-INTEGER functions which converts between YYYYMMDD and “days since 12/31/1600”
comment in response to post
If there’s interest I could do a thread explaining this, but the tl;dr is that there’s certainly no general COBOL feature that would make this true, and I can find no evidence of any implementations that do this.

Recently saw a post where someone used sour dough starter in a roux for a soup, and now I really want to try that.

Low key would have been a much easier process if I’d have shredded my passport and reported it lost honestly (not that I would ever purger myself of course)
comment in response to post
Side note: by far the worst post office experience of my life. I think “damaged passport” is a rare case for them and they don’t know about the extra documentation you need to provide in that case. That plus someone who seemed to be having a real bad day is not a good combo

I want the first person to post a recipe for canned chickpeas, mashed, air fried and then coated in buffalo sauce and title it “falafel” and see what the comments would look like

(So you might even fail to Counterspell a first level spell). Probably a significant nerf overall
comment in response to post
Oh I should say it isn’t just they can’t cast the spell full stop. They make a con saving throw against the counterspellers DC
comment in response to post
Also Counterspell itself is different now. There’s no upcasting/ability check. It’s just “you stop them from casting the spell” In exchange though now if you’re counterspelled the slot isn’t expended. Tbh I liked the old gamble of “should I upcast?”, feels less engaging now
comment in response to post
Yeah, and not having e.g. quickened Forcecage be an option lol. But for sure the buffs to martials were a big part too (though tavern brawler + strength elixir availability was truly egregious)
comment in response to post
You mean like the “counterspell your Counterspell” kind of stuff? Meh I don’t really mind that. Every player only has one reaction and one reaction plus a 3rd+ level spell slot is a hefty cost. I’ve never really seen a chain be longer than 2 before and even that’s somewhat rare
comment in response to post
(Though ig it reigns in silvery barbs a bit? You can’t use it on your own spells now, assuming conventional casting, which is probably good teamwork wise)
comment in response to post
(Also the 2024 change, while positive overall, has the weird consequence of preventing you from conventionally casting reaction spells on your turn, which I think is a bit odd.)
comment in response to post
Yeah I think limiting action surge to non-magic actions was a good change balance wise. And for the same reason I think Quicken spell should retain this restriction. But I don’t think it’d be unbalanced to just loosen this rule for “naturally” bonus action spells
comment in response to post
Tbh the total freedom you had in Baldurs Gate 3 wasn’t really unbalanced at all, but they benefitted from a reduced spell list for sure. I’d definitely leave the restriction on Quicken Spell, but tbh you could probably just get rid of the restriction for bonus action spells
