Nah it was just canceled because of low ratings, it came out slightly before genre shows got widely popular, and the fact it was in a weird time slot and they played the episodes out of order didn’t help.

The “freedom fries” thing was just in certain government buildings and literally everyone was making fun of it though

The reason stuff like LGBTQ rights, women’s rights and disabled rights are better in individualist countries is because individualism fundamentally says everyone has different needs and should have individual rights and be able to pursue their own happiness, not conform for the sake of the group.

Ever hear the term “controlled opposition”? That’s what Democrats are.
comment in response to

Yeah that’s exactly true about capitalism, and that’s why in collectivist societies they have much worse oppression of LGBTQ people and women and disabled people, it’s just the winners forcing their view on everyone else. American individualism protects against that facet of capitalism somewhat.

Yeah but at 17 his dad would likely be young Gen X at oldest, yet the references he makes are from decades before his dad was born. The references are too old for even his dad, and he makes these old references before meeting AG. I’m around his dad’s age and the references were too old for me to get

When people say collectivist they’re talking about the contrast between western individualism vs Asian &middle eastern collectivism. Western individualism can have cooperation, there’s nothing about individualism that means we can’t have universal healthcare, most individualist western countries do.

Our current society encourages conformity too much already, working at a company is all about conforming to mostly nonsensical rules. You can’t even dress how you want at work. There are tons of conformist social rules in life and they mostly serve capitalism, like having to buy the right products.
comment in response to

Collectivism is also weaponized by capitalists, in collectivist societies they can’t even leave work until their boss does and they’re required to give up their personal life for the collective of the company. The problem is capitalism, not individualism.

Yeah, socialism is an economic philosophy, it doesn’t have to be collectivist, you can have socialism and individualism. I’m a market socialist.
comment in response to

There’s no such thing as a society where you don’t have to conform even a little, even the most individualist societies on the planet have laws you have to follow. Collectivism is what they have in Asian and middle east societies, which tend to have arranged marriages and lack LGBTQ rights.
comment in response to

Middle eastern, south Asian and East Asian societies are collectivist and that’s what they’re like.
comment in response to

Yeah collectivist societies are capitalist. Like you realize India and Japan and South Korea and basically every middle eastern country is capitalist and has a collectivist society?

I found it hard to get past the 17 year old main character exclusively making pop culture references from the 1950s and showing zero indication of being aware of anything modern, even though it takes place in the modern day.

Those are western countries, they’re individualist.

Individualism is why we have LGBTQ rights instead of arranged marriages. In collectivism you sacrifice the life you want to marry who your family wants, if you’re LGBTQ you just have to suppress it. There’s a reason almost no collectivist societies have gay marriage but many have arranged marriages.
comment in response to

Collectivist societies still have capitalism, they just have an even bigger expectation that you work yourself to death and have zero life outside your job because your individual needs don’t matter, you must sacrifice for the company.
comment in response to
post
That’s why in collectivism they have arranged marriages, and if you’re LGBTQ then too bad because you must conform and marry who your parents choose. You have to work yourself to death for the system. Individual needs don’t matter.
comment in response to
post
In collectivist societies they don’t have LGBTQ rights or disabled rights or women’s rights or worker rights. Collectivism is about everyone needing to conform and if you can’t or won’t you’re completely screwed. They must live for the system, not themselves. Individualism isn’t the problem.

The Bible being evil doesn’t make the Quran any less evil. Both religions are incompatible with basic human rights.
comment in response to
post
The Bible says in the New Testament slaves must obey their masters, women should be submissive and silent and obey men like men obey god, and god makes people gay as punishment for idolatry and then punishes them again for being gay. The Quran is horrible too but let’s not pretend the Bible is good.

I feel horrible for the people of Iran being so oppressed but it’s just none of the US’s business. Look how badly Afghanistan went. We’d only make things worse. And traditionally when the US does successfully overthrow a 3rd world government we replace it with a right wing dictatorship.
comment in response to
post
I agree the US shouldn’t get involved since we’d only make things worse, but the people in Iran didn’t vote to be taken over by a theocracy. Women there had freedom as recently as the ‘70s and now the government murders them for not wearing a hijab.
comment in response to

The people born there have no choice about living there though, and a lot of LGBTQ people and women and atheists don’t want to live there and be horribly oppressed but have no choice. Invading them won’t do any good, but the oppression their governments do isn’t okay at all.

In a religious sense, karma doesn’t come back to you until after you’re dead, so we won’t know for sure it doesn’t exist until we die.
comment in response to

Karma doesn’t happen until after you die though. The religions that believe in karma say after death you go to naraka (like purgatory) and pay back your karma before being reincarnated.

Being sexually attracted to someone doesn’t and shouldn’t mean objectifying them. You can see people you find attractive as human beings, not objects. They’ve done MRI studies and objectification is a literal thing, it’s processing people in the part of the brain meant for objects, not people.

I think it’s more like “this person isn’t entirely horrible, and this other person is a completely evil monster but they’re somewhat less insane than the other completely evil monster, so I guess I’ll rank the less insane evil monster as my #2 behind the one that’s not too horrible”

Shouldn’t it be mentioned that the murderer was a right wing extremist whose crime was politically motivated? This isn’t a time for “both sides of the aisle,” only one side is responsible for this. Almost all terrorism is from right wing extremists.

They had work permits. There’s a reason almost everyone you hear about getting snatched by ICE is actually here legally. If ICE went after actual illegal immigrants, it would be bad for the wealthy who exploit them by paying less than minimum wage. Legal immigrants have to be paid minimum wage.

Yeah it says at the bottom that the actual stat is “25-30% of fraud allegations” and Musk changed that to “approximately 40%”
comment in response to
post
It’s not saying 40% of direct deposit calls are fraud. It’s saying that when looking at direct deposit fraud specifically, about 40% of that type of fraud is done over the phone. (Though the real number is 25-30% and it was changed to “approximately 40%)
comment in response to

It’s actually “40% of a specific type of fraud is done over the phone”
They’re talking about direct deposit fraud, not any other type of fraud. For direct deposit fraud, 25-30% of it is done over the phone. That got changed to “about 40%” then flipped to “40% of phone calls are fraud”

It’s wild that Heathcliff used to be pretty mid and unremarkable but now it’s hilarious and one of the best comics. I don’t think it’s ever happened before that a classic comic actually improved, usually they just get worse and worse.

I really don’t believe there can be any possible consent for violent, degrading sex with a severely mentally ill homeless person who is in your direct employ who relies on you for housing and whose pay you’re withholding

Also martial arts at a world champion level won’t actually do anything against an attacker twice your size and strength
There’s a reason martial arts is useless in MMA, it’s more of a workout routine than an actual way to win a fight

It’s not really good for democracy to have different opinions on who deserves basic human rights, we should all agree everyone has equal rights. It’s also not great for democracy for people to be denying objective reality, that just causes ignorant voting choices.
