“There's been a watertight scientific & economic case on the need to stop bottom trawling in marine protected areas” Only 38 of 377 MPAs are fully protected from bottom trawling. It's shocking. @hugotagholm.bsky.social in Wildlife Mag on the proposed bans 🔽 www.discoverwildlife.com/environment/...

#fabulamurina (mouse story) 440 Silvius cerasum maturum invenit et gladium ligneum stringit (Silvius finds a ripe cherry and draws his wooden sword). cerasum tripartito dividet et porcellum, echinum muremque pascet (He'll divide the cherry in three and feed the piglet, the hedgehog and the mouse).

“We’re scrapping our DEI initiative…” From the new Private Eye, out now.

I don’t necessarily have scientific data to support this, but it’s an undeniable fact that grilled cheese tastes at least 36% better when cut diagonally.

I found this pair in my garden this morning. I am not sure of the identification but we are a long way from water on top of a chalk hill in the #Chilterns near #Chesham. Dreadful photi but the best that I could do with my phone.

There's a thread on AskReddit asking, "People who have had to drain their life’s savings on a single event, what happened?" 99% of the answers are depressing American stories about medical bills, 1% is an Australian who found a wombat burrowing under their house.

In the Sunday Telegraph today. If you have a Tory MP please email them asking for their advocacy on this tiny measure, by asking them to speak in support of mandating swift bricks to Kevin Hollinrake the Shadow Housing Minister.

Incredible.

Thames Water is now controlled by two US credit powerhouses: Silver Point Capital and Elliott Management. Their game - asset stripping, profiteering, slick PR, devour; to get high returns. Govt can put an end by bringing water into public ownership, but refuses. People's misery to deepen.

Best of luck to ‪@hobgoblin.com‬ with their crowdfunder. Please consider helping to support this long-standing folk music institution. bmmagazine.co.uk/in-business/...

The Spending Review included much needed transport funding for our city regions, but very little for rural areas dealing with high housing targets & poor public transport. In this blog, we look at why we're still not making the link between new housing & public transport: buff.ly/kNDZmeQ

'Ar ôl y glaw - After the rain' A welcome chance to get out in late afternoon at The British, Abersychan after heavy rain was rewarded with the beauty of these Oxeye daisies waving like a crowd, you could almost hear them cheer! How this old industrial site has transformed.

This tile comes from the workshops of William De Morgan. William De Morgan was one of the most important ceramic artists of the Arts and Crafts movement. He initially trained as a fine artist but changed direction when in 1863 he met William Morris.

I really cannot stress how contemptible this is – or how deeply offensive it is to the families of people who fought and died in conflicts as America’s military allies, when it asked for help. There are hundreds of such families in the UK alone. And thousands more who served and returned.

I was on my boat late last night & thought I heard a scrabbling noise coming from outside. I saw movement out of the corner of my eye & looked up to see a fox had come through my open boat hatch & was climbing into my bed!

Deep Blue is 30 years old and was capable of defeating chess grand champions. It could be housed in a single cabinet. ChatGPT spans untold data centers devouring massive amounts of electricity and it got its ass whipped by an 8 bit gaming console from the 1970s.

I've never met an ex-miner who wanted their children to go underground. The ones I have spoken to wanted better opportunities for them.

We don't allow sewage sludge in our organic farming standards because until there is appropriate regulation, there is a serious risk that it will contain microplastics and forever chemicals that potentially endanger human, animal and soil health www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

House Martins used to be a regular sight in urban areas, but changes to construction alongside reduction in insect populations and urban ponds with available mud have led to a massive decline in numbers. Find out how you can help in their survival 👇 buff.ly/fyEG6cs

In case you're wondering, authoritarians use this strategy of escalation to manufacture crisis, provoke outrage, then use the reaction to justify repression. It’s not about restoring order, it's about creating a spectacle of chaos they can claim only they can control.
