"oh, this time of great suffering will produce great art" no it fucking won't, it'll mean artists spend all their creative energy on "how do I pay for food this week"

RIP Brian Wilson. This is my favourite piece of music he ever wrote, slated for the aborted *SMiLE* album, and repurposed for the group's 1971 record of the same name. Gloriously melancholic.

My movie rating system. 4.5-5 stars: a classic that I must somehow add to my collection. 4 stars: Enjoyed! would watch again 3-3.5: Enjoyed. Wouldn't necessarily watch again. 2.5 or less: Well, that sure was a movie of some kind.

Bluesky is NOT an echo chamber. So many of the people I follow are not like me. They have different identities, cultural backgrounds, and life experiences to mine. I have a lot to learn from them. We just agree on being kind and respectful. That's no echo. That's just human decency.

Tame Impala's 2020 single is concerned with humanity's tendency for nostalgia. How does it avoid the cliches and deliver something unique that sounds contemporary, while also (appropriately!) delving into pop music approaches of the past, too?

You know what I love? Living in a city. Sharing space in a park or a patio with people I don't know, walking 5 minutes to a complete change of scenery, hearing other people living their lives from my yard, walking around a corner & seeing something has changed & saying "oh, hey, what's that!?"

"And what of the story this song tells? Are we on the narrator’s side here, or do we simply condemn him as a weakling? Do we identify with his situation, or deride him for staying in it?"

Frog and Toad quickly ran back to the store. Then they sat in the shade of a large tree and ate their chocolate ice-cream cones together.

The internet.

This is one fuckin' absurd world we've made, alright.

Two giant egos clashing was inevitable. Everyone knew that. It's still just a distraction. The damage they're doing rolls forward whether they're in a tiff or not.

Reading the news today feels like "whatever that is, I don't get it" for me.

So it goes.

A denizen of commuterland I forgot about was "Person Talking on the Phone on the Bus for the Whole Ride at 7 a.m". I don't want to talk to people irl at that time. WHO ARE THEY TALKING TO?

The Offspring's "Self-Esteem" captured the pop-punk spirit of the times. But it was also presented in a wider cultural environment when pop psychology terms were used as window dressing for very simplistic narratives. How might this song take that apart?
