The democratic party has been shrinking away from trans stuff since mid 2024, I think they "Kamala is for they/them" ad freaked out a lot of very tentative allies even though identity politics as a whole wasn't a main issue in exit polling.

Anyone period should be entitled to housing and a living wage regardless of the entire rest of their life. The "maybe minimum wage" line seems really cruel to me anyway. Even in our current system, judges don't word sentences as "X years plus a lifetime of poverty", and they shouldn't. The fact that

No this is a pretty common opinion in the U.S., it's a cruel country. I don't really care about the specific justification for it though, involuntary servitude isn't justifiable to me in any circumstance.

I may be an outsider for this, but I don't think murderers should be enslaved either. Inherent inhumanity of slavery aside, If you complete a long sentence (like one for a violent crime) and rejoin the outside world without 20 years of income, you're screwed and will probably end up back in prison.

We might be thinking of different measures, I absolutely support minimum wage workers and they still deserve a lot more than they get. There was a ballot measure that banned involuntary servitude as criminal punishment, which sadly failed. 1/2

And yes, no one should be forced to work without pay (slavery.) Personally I'd prefer if the prison system was purposed for rehabilitation, and I include the perpetrators of violent crimes.
