Typical leftist, but not into identity politics. I believe in a citizenship where unique individuals are too subtle to be reduced to broad labels.

One of the favorite tactics of populists is to screw things up and then pretend they are the most qualified to fix the mess. As long as voters buy it, screw them.

Swiss presidents generally have very basic/manual jobs, and it's the wealthiest country in the world and one of the happiest. They also commute by train, stand if no seat is available, do their laundry themselves, don't need bodyguards and return to their normal jobs after some years.

A lot of Americans say "shtring" when talking about strings. I never understood why.

Add this to immigration that exploded after Brexit. Populism never pays off.

That's what happened in Hungary: when you criticize the regime, you are relocated to some other place far enough in the country to dissuade anyone from daring to open their mouth. All of that without having to change laws, stop elections or create gulags.

I would be surprised if Taiwan has any "desire" to help China, but maybe.

You can teach democracy to a nation for 200 years and they turn into a sect in a couple of months.

And, by crashing the world economy, he'll help extract less fossil fuels from the ground and slow down climate change.

Cars should be taxed based on the square of their weight. That would calm a lot of manufacturers down.

Without tariffs and their economic consequences, a majority of Americans would be perfectly fine with a fascist agenda at this point. It's not about a lack of access to information, it's a political shift that is here to stay.

I already spotted one: mini electric foil shaver: $135 on Amazon US. Now €35 on EU Amazon websites.

There won't be any special deal for the UK. Otherwise, every EU member state would ask for the same.

Still waiting for this level of political vision here in Switzerland. We feel like cavemen.

That's a hell of a resilience test for when it will last for days. Main takeaway: we are not prepared at all.

Switzerland is a direct democracy and it works OK. This said, lobbys totally rule the country. Finance, oil, pharma, weapons, agriculture,... our seven ministers are not much more than obedient muppets. It's the case in every country, but it's still extreme even in Switzerland.

The 77 millions retards who voted for him will still be around when he won't be president anymore. So, as far as I'm concerned, I'll look for other destinations even in the longer run.

Trump is like these people who call you on the phone to try to sell you an insurance. You just need to say "No, thank you." and the problem is solved.

I don't have any sympathy for Trump, but this has absolutely nothing to do with the new administration. As a European visitor to the US, I can guarantee it has been exactly like this for decades.

I travelled to the US ten years ago and it was already exactly like this. The arrogance and rudeness of US Border staff always stunned me. They make you feel like you're guilty of visiting the US and spending money there.

I've been calling the US a Copcracy for a long time, because I'm always amazed how anyone who wears a uniform in the US expects you to obey, as opposed to Europe where cops are around to serve.
