“My name’s Donovan. Irish. Both sides, mother and father. I’m Irish, you’re German. But what makes us both Americans? Just one thing. One, one, one. The rule book. We call it the Constitution and we agree to the rules, and that’s what makes us Americans.” — Bridge of Spies

When teaching "Intro to International Relations" I aimed to minimize *reliance* on AI (though not banning its use). For example, the course paper was written iteratively and interactively. Specifically, students wrote it in segments and peer-reviewed those segments over multiple TA sections.

What a recipe for stupid.... "Indiana has decided that world history is no longer a required subject for graduation. As such, unfortunately my position as a world history teacher has been eliminated and it sounds like most schools across the state are following suit."

The Democratic National Committee will park a taco truck outside the Republican National Committee’s headquarters on Capitol Hill with a graphic of President Trump in a chicken suit and the “Trump Always Chickens Out” slogan, Axios reports.

This is how you put fascists in their place.

Investors should keep faith with U.S. corporations and their ability to fund bond payments. After the strong years 2023-2024, corporate credit sheets are “set up to weather the storm...it is possible to stay shorter in corporate credit without exposing oneself to a high level of interest rate risk.

The swamp “For decades, the FBI and DOJ have been the main enforcers against political corruption and white-collar fraud. In four months, Trump dismantled key parts of that infrastructure, creating...the ripest environment for corruption by public officials and business executives in a generation."

Voters are stupid. "75% said they were concerned about the growing federal debt and thought Congress should tackle it. However, only 17% thought Social Security was the largest federal spending program (it is) and only 27% thought extending 2017 tax cuts another decade would push deficits higher."

Hey Texas voters, let's find WORSE people to send to DC this time! "Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) trails Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) by 22 points, according to a new independent poll of the Senate GOP primary, 50% to 28%."

FAFO, MAGA morons....... “Federal Emergency Management Agency officials are scrapping a hurricane-response plan that its recently appointed leader, David Richardson, had said was close to completion, according to agency staff,” the Wall Street Journal reports.

I'm so glad we got rid of DEI and are hiring on merit now

I don't get people denying what was painfully obvious. Just makes them look blindly partisan and foolish. "Ashley Biden, daughter of former President Biden, issued a fiery response to a new book alleging her father is in cognitive decline, calling the claims “damn disrespectful” and “fake news.”

DOGE’s intense scrutiny of federal spending is forcing employees to spend hours justifying even the most basic purchases. New rules mandating review and approval by political appointees are leaving thousands of contracts and projects on ice for months.

The ISM manufacturing survey comments are lit: “.. supply chain disruptions rivaling that of COVID ..”

Had a good run. 🇺🇸

Happy Pride! 🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈🏳️‍🌈 Did you know that the Rainbow Flag made its first public appearance during the San Francisco Gay Freedom Parade on June 25, 1978? But who exactly made it? What was the inspiration behind its rainbow-like design?

Happy Pride to all celebrating. Hopefully there will come a day where this country is a little more accepting, a little more welcoming, and a whole lot safer for our LGBTQ brothers and sisters. Until then, please know you are loved and you are seen. 🏳️‍🌈 🏳️‍⚧️

The anguish of gay Americans who were called “sexual psychopaths” in Congress and fired from their jobs fueled the first public demonstrations for gay rights in the nation. The fight for dignity continued through the AIDS epidemic and the battle for marriage equality.

I never watch movies about embassies for this same reason, they are ridiculous BS. And from the very little bit I ever learned about intelligence people, this guy is real. The movies aren't. Much rather watch a good murder mystery, even with no explosions.

I am so glad I have a generational revulsion against the very idea that I should hang out with a chatbot and let it become a character in my world. Fuck that for a joke.

Counterpoint: you actually did vote to deport moms. What part of “mass deportations now” did you not understand?

I'm just relieved to see that they won't try to fuck up part of the Mall for this ridiculous monstrosity.

I have a Treasury bond maturing today. All proceeds are going into short-term corporate debt ETFs that diversify widely across blue cup companies and have little or not US Treasury exposure. You get a rate equal to or better than inflation plus a surprising amount of safety.

I just saw a popup ad that said STOP PROCRASTINATING NOW! Then it had a GET STARTED button below that. Seriously.

Sorry, suckers! Sen. Joni Ernst (R-IA) pushed back against constituents who shouted out at her recent town hall meeting that cuts to Medicaid would cause people to die, responding: “Well, we’re all going to die."

Weird to call the "coverup" of Biden's decline 'worse than Watergate' as: • It's clearly bulls*** to keep attention on the book • There are actual precedents, e.g. coverups of a) RR's worsening senility towards the end of his 2nd term, b) Wilson's stroke, and c) FDR's deteriorating health in '44.

Discussing bladder dysfunction is usually the province of the 60+ age band. Elon got a head start. But doing it with drugs is cheating.

The selling of the presidency is the most successful business venture of Donald Trump’s career, @dgraham.bsky.social writes in The Atlantic Daily.

There’s your empty shelf. US goods imports drop 19.8% in April — largest on record

Disinvestment: “More than $14 billion in clean energy investments in the U.S. have been canceled or delayed this year, according to an analysis released Thursday, as President Donald Trump’s pending megabill has raised fears over the future of domestic

The insane American gun cult. With all the Trumpy BS lately, I haven't said that often enough. Sadly, there will be plenty more opportunities in the future. Another 40-50K people will be killed by guns this year, the majority by their own hand. Others have to cower and hide. Even kids.
