I wasn’t an 80’s kid but I feel the draw for this would have been largely novelty. The barrier to entry for effects like these is significantly lower now. We’re still capable of appreciating art and effort, but the standard changes.
And, you couldn’t skip it. I bet a lot of folks would have.

This reminds me of the scene from Silicon Valley where Erlich’s describing how he got all the VCs to fight over them, based solely on the perception that their competitors were all doing it too. No fundamentals, just a stupidity arms race.

If Ds don’t attend, could their seats be taken? Empty half of a chamber speaks volumes but I wouldn’t put it past the majority to counter with seat-fillers. Fill the uppers with fired gov workers. Do rotunda interviews with them on major networks before and after. Highlight the human cost of cuts.

Give it another 18 months and these people will conveniently forget the horrors their decision wrought on their neighbors. I grew up in Omaha. People there are caring and well-meaning, but also world champs at compartmentalization and rationalization.
