That's definitely gone away over the last 20 years, to the point it's competely alien to my son... The idea that everyone would listen to the same radio show, or watch the same TV program, then talk about it, rather than just 1 or 2 people obsessing over K-pop, or Eastern European electronica etc

The interesting things have always happened at the edges, but the fascinating thing to me is how back in the 90's, for example, they had to seep through into mainstream media to become well-known. You could trace music getting onto late night shows, then daytime playlists, then discussed at school.

Probably good for my own finances I missed the sale of the soul, blues and punk. Not as up on my reggae and dub, but there's plenty that I recognise. I've tried to justify my videogames, comics and vinyl/CD collections with a similar plan, but I'm not convinced I'll be able to part with them all.

Judging by the selection for sale, it's an impressive collection...

It's a good answer to the question, and it definitely seems to rely on how much you already know about a subject, and also how critical an error might be. I tend to only ever use it as a secondary check on things like research or writing after I've already done the work and can spot the AI lies

It feels a bit like telling people to prepare for the adoption of electic cars by being aware of speed limits.

Probably - I'm not too far down the road, and I know people have popped down for @dpipboro.bsky.social in the past... Can have a look and let you know...

OnlyDans Fans... (I actually sim race with another chap named Daniel, so it's an obviously been suggested as a sponsor several times)

More positive fan news, it appears to have jumped back into life, thankfully...

Sounds a bit like a medical diagnosis to me... "I'm terrible sorry, but you appear to have contracted a case of Starkey-Cock. Some penicillin will sort you out in a week or so..."

I was starting to get bored of watching our huge resident pigeons in the garden - until I happened to have a tribute to Sly Stone on the radio. Pigeons walking along a fence to 70's funk is great entertainment...

Obviously I have absolutely no idea what you might be referring to, beyond references in popular culture... These days it's multi-vitamins and cod liver oil...

I had a fairly normal 80's/90's childhood, but to my son it appears to be some kind of unimaginably feral Lord of the Flies existence going off to explore the local woods all day, or climbing over abandoned buildings, messing around on skateboards and mopeds without instantly being arrested etc

I thought about getting older and wiser, but settled for just getting older and hoping @lizrandell.bsky.social continues to supply the wiser bit...

Seeing similar on a couple of sites at the moment. Impressions up a lot, clicks the same, or dropping.

Mine is roughly half of Stephen Fry having followed in his wake through Soho... Halved my time back to my-then office as everyone moved out of his way to gawp and take photos...

I think it's always been derived/associated with food - e.g. picnic hamper is/was a fairly common term, along with food hampers. You can get beer hampers, although that always sounds odd and fairly pretentious to me, even as a lover of obscure craft ale.

Fast forward 10 years or more, when no-one remembers how anything was done pre-AI in the event of any failure :)

Ditto - AI as an optional paid choice, fair enough. But every business is increasing prices because they've insisted on forcing AI into their products, whether people actually want/use it or not. In the case of Workspace, it's a prompt to decide whether I need it and how many accounts I'll delete

I've written something for employers/clients/personal sites pretty much every day for 20 years. But this year I've closed some personal projects because the opportunities for 'pure content' to be worthwhile are far more limited, and there was no good 'pivot' for them.

One idea is that people who love writing for example, will just keep doing it endlessly with no reward (or that they won't need to, thanks to AI) The reality is that they won't. Personally I haven't played guitar as much since I stopped gigging, and shouting into the void gets depressing after time

Nice addition, particularly not making it a Premium feature (can't always justifying paying for side projects/experiments, and some small clients are reluctant)....

Great tips - and in a funny coincidence, my business is almost the same age (4 months younger)... Couldn't agree more about investing in a decent chair, especially as I've got older. 3 of my best investments in my business have been a chair, footrest and monitor stand...

Childhood's End seems quite appropriate too, if we swap AI for the alien consciousness.

Yep. And I'm not really worried about myself, but mainly for my parents at an age when they might be more susceptible, and for my son having to live with it throughout his career... As always, all the weight, responsibility and bad effects seems to fall on individuals.

I'm just glad that so far I've managed to spot the scams, but given Veo and other improvements to AI video, it's only going to get more difficult (and no matter how educated I am about scams, it's only a matter of time before I'm caught out when tired, distracted and not paying 100% attention)...

And it only ever happens on client sites where I don't have FTP access, and can't just hope in and rename the plugin folder to get things working quicker etc... I ended up providing hosting at close to cost price for smaller clients just to avoid those situations.

It's either that or the 'I just need to do one thing on the website before I finish, and now the whole thing has gone down for some reason' moment.
