It’s such a good one, and that does indeed sound epic.

When I gush over a thing, I mean it!

A classic! I can also cop to being a HUGE fan of the Andre Agassi aesthetic, which had similar vibes.

Give the guy 2-3 warnings and then pull the plug. Solved. Easy.

29. Super Darius — Do you like blowing up fish? This is a solid time if you recognize going in that it’s your typically unforgiving shooter. It’s an impressive port, and I’m glad it’s been preserved.

28. Space Harrier — God help me, I liked this a fair bit more than the sequel on the Genesis. I think the d-pad and turbo switches on the Turbografx-16 improve the experience a lot. The frame rate is still trash and good luck getting through this without save states, but it really was kinda fun.

27. Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze — Felt like a necessary step forward from the SNES classics without eschewing the important bits. A truly inventive and satisfying platformer. What a delight to get to play this together with my youngest!

26. Secret of Mana — This little gal is a wild time, providing stellar looks & soundtrack and unique nav & battle systems … and yet … it’s got issues. The first couple of hours are punishing, the combat ends up being way more basic than intended, and I kind of hated the end game. Good, not great.

So I just got to the final boss and yuck. My appreciation has been sufficiently lowered.

I like old man choices, dammit.

Oops, not a subscriber. Guessing a lot of the standard old-man choices are included: Tecmo, Jam, Blitz, EA NHL etc.

The best advice I have upfront is you give everything its best — no cutting corners. So use good wood. Buy decent meat. Take your time. All the recipes and such stem from those basics. You’ll also be surprised what you can achieve with salt and pepper and nothing else.

Yeah, I’m thinking it’s how a person defines “top heavy” here that accounts for the difference. I’m picking the SNES too, but it’s primarily because of the top-end stuff. Want top shelf stuff = SNES Want better grab bag = SNES Want more games total = Genesis

Genesis has a ton of doubles and triples, while the very top of the SNES library is just insane. So while the SNES has a quality library with a ton of good games - probably a better average score per individual game - it’s still ultimately top-heavy because the top is all-time good (imo).

I enjoy your takes because they’re often so different from what I’m thinking or feeling, but you always make a good case. For comparison, I have the SNES so much more top heavy with 10 games in my top 50 and only one Genesis game in there, but as you said, that’s just speaking for myself.

Finding an appreciation for that era/those games/that company has been such a marvelous thing.

25. Mega Man 2 — Playing this game, for me, is like eating a dang chicken pot pie: it’s just the ultimate comfort food.

24. TMNT4: Turtles in Time — Goated. That’s all that needs to be said.

I kept hearing that, but the issues feel mostly like positives to me, refreshing differences from standard turn-based rpgs. It’s been a surprising delight.

I like FF6 better than Chrono Trigger, fwiw. Incredible game. Currently working through Secret of Mana and my hottest take might be that there isn’t some huge gap between that one and CT/FF6 like some want to think.

This is the kind of game that lives up to the memories/nostalgia you have of the Knicks-Pacers series back in the day. Almost impossible to do.

Saints fans who experienced beast quake and BC fans should be buds for life!

The show was very well done. It’s a Sunday morning ritual to watch CBS with Cait over coffee, so we’re probably particularly predisposed toward enjoying. 🤣
