Was consumed all day at work by the fact that trump tweeted "UNCONDITIONAL SURRENDER!" at Iran, which from any normal president would be hugely consequential and it wasn't even a story because the media has just sort of deformed itself into nihilistic acceptance of the fact that he's insane

NEW: Gov. Hochul announces that the state is dedicating $50 million for legal assistance for immigrants like those who may be targeted by ICE when leaving the federal courthouse

The students are winning.

Ok now do charges against the thugs who arrested him

Exactly, plus he's been doing it week after week

Rally against Brad Lander's arrest

Remember when he first left office and was like "there's a line, if Trump crosses it, I'll return to lead the revolution" and it sounded so badass in the moment and then he just went waterskiing while Trump lit the Constitution on fire?

I'm going to indulge the fantasy of an effective Democratic party that will put ICE agents in prison if they ever take power again, even though we all know they'll just say we need to heal & move on & pretend none of this ever happened

You can't arrest people without warrants, you can't arrest people for asking to see a warrant and you can't bar reporters you don't like from City Hall press conferences This concludes today's lesson in Civics in The City

Reviewing page proofs for a chapter I finished writing in 2022 and I weirdly don't hate the thing

Your favourite writers can barely afford to eat.

"You don't have the authority to arrest US citizens who are asking to see a judicial warrant." NYC mayoral candidate Brad Lander being arrested *along with a member of his NYPD security team* by ICE.

CNN putting @nytpitchbot.bsky.social out of work

the new york times of course plays no role in setting norms of political coverage for any other media, being the smol beans that they are

What is common knowledge in your field but shocks outsiders? No amount of research can guarantee the tiny flash of insight that leads to a new interpretation. That’s why writing history is stressful and can’t be systematized.

New York City did not defund the police. This is not a thing that happened.

Today, more starving Palestinians were lured into “aid distribution sites”. They went in hope that they might find a bag of flour. They were gunned down and murdered instead. What utter inhumanity. End all arms sales to Israel, now.

Currently subjecting myself to an exchange between Joe Rogan & Mark Zuckerberg talking haptics where Zuck demonstrates the understanding of a well-informed journalist despite owning a company that's spent probably $100m on the tech & Rogan sounds like someone who just watched Ready Player One.

why would anyone anywhere in the world trust anything one american government promises when this can happen to them a few years later

Sen. Tammy Duckworth just said on Colbert, "We should all live long enough to develop a disability," & the audience laughed uncomfortably. I can tell you what they were thinking. It was "Not me. That would never happen to me." & the underlying, unacknowlged premise was "b/c I'm better than that."

even the NYPD isn't pretending subways are crime-ridden hellscapes! "Subway crime decreased to the second-lowest level in 27 years, with major crime dropping 18.1% (465 vs. 568) during the first quarter, and zero murders in the transit system for the first time in seven years."

Well, this is gross.

You can now recreate the greatest Marvel crossover of all time in Fortnite www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1FL...

We rose this weekend and we’re not bowing anytime soon. #NoKings

Maybe the best film ever made about the privacy implications of networked technology, and as relevant today as it was 30+ years ago. Plus: absurdly stacked cast, stylish pre-tech SF aesthetic, and Branford Marsalis on the soundtrack. So great!

Hacky post here but if any other president had said "everyone evacuate Tehran" it would be shitting pants time around the world. Now we gotta lay good odds it's just this fat old dunce doing work for the bit.

Fuck the NYT and their wink-wink-not-really-an-endorsement of a corrupt predator

I've said it many times before and Andrew Cuomo is making me say it again: we don't have a cancellation problem. We have never had a cancellation problem. To the contrary, we have a problem that "disgrace" is a very temporary embarrassment— an brief entr'acte more than an intermission.

I'm just gonna repost every thread about this decision. The moral clarity. After months of judicial ticky tacky gaslighting. Bracing.

Done

I get upset when I hear the Civil Rights movement characterized as “nonviolent”. It was violent. People were injured. Killed. There *was* violence. It just wasn’t perpetrated by the resistors.

Can confirm. There is a (shrinking) element of DC apparatchiks who still believe that the system is self-correcting and everything will be fine after another election or two. For the most part, though, folks in DC are MORE worried about the future of this country than the general public or media.

If this leads to fewer people getting their news from CNN, huge win.

Early voted for Zohran today! Hope it's not the BlueSky echo chamber effect but really feeling like he's got a shot...

Congratulations to #HPS scholar Lorraine Daston (PhD History of Science '79) on receiving 2025 Centennial Medal (award given by Harvard Grad School to its alums for their contributions to society.) Her work crosses disciplinary divides & opens new fields of inquiry. gsas.harvard.edu/news/lorrain...

There's a thread on AskReddit asking, "People who have had to drain their life’s savings on a single event, what happened?" 99% of the answers are depressing American stories about medical bills, 1% is an Australian who found a wombat burrowing under their house.

For everyone who believed Republican business owners and farmers in red states would come to regret their vote, I present to you a criminal president who will not enforce the law equally or impartially. apnews.com/article/trum...

If AOC wasn’t a woman, she would’ve been president for five years now.

An interesting account of the way that some writers are using AI to conceptualize and write works of history. Most of the benefits described here involve ways of amalgamating and synthesizing materials from already-existing digital databases. I remain concerned... www.nytimes.com/2025/06/16/m...

I know this is controversial but I don't think we need to pay anybody to assault senior citizens. We can defund this 100%.
