UPDATE: David Huerta was just released from custody!

A full Tejano band in a big truck rolled into the Olvera St, the lead singer has a Fuck ICE shirt on, and this protest is now a dance party

Trump is acting like a dictator—deploying the military against its own citizens, threatening the arrest of elected officials, charging peaceful political opponents like David Huerta on dubious charges because they expressed their 1st amendment rights.

unlawful, unprecedented. an invasion & assault on the residents of california. congress so far is useless. but governors are not. stand up, in unison, because this is an attack on all states' self-governance. trump will come after all of them eventually.

grateful to @bedoyaftc.bsky.social for his FTC leadership. this is the outcome trump illegally demanded & that the oligarchic right will cheer. it's america's loss.

"The Guardian’s reporting found that dozens of investigators were following student protesters on and off campus, and in some instances were confrontational, cursed at students, threatened them, and in one case drove a car at a student who had to jump out of the way..."

one of the greats. RIP.

At least 2 journalists have been injured while covering protests in LA. ARTICLE 19 joins partner press freedom and human rights groups in calling for journalists to protected. They must be able to carry out their vital work in safety. www.independent.co.uk/news/world/a...

Exactly right. There is a vast corpus of guidance and soft law on managing peaceful protests responsibly, including a practical toolkit for law enforcement by former @unsrapporteurfoaa.bsky.social Clement Voule: www.ohchr.org/en/documents...

the american experience of protest over the past ten years is that police are too often poorly trained when it comes to journalist protection. harassment to detentions to injuries, they fail basic rules. it's one of those under-reported outrages for a country that claims to embrace free speech.

super important to keep facts straight. all on the ground reporting shows the situation in LA is tense, was tense, but in no way out of control apart from law enforcement disproportionate use of force. (ps donate to public radio)

it’s 100% fair to center miller in this moment. he is not only full of hate and racism, as very well reported. his unpopularity is legendary. put him right next to trump and vance to highlight how white nationalism is the agenda.

As of Sunday morning, National Guard troops began stationing in downtown Los Angeles. Two starkly contrasting pictures of conditions in the L.A. area continued to be offered by President Donald Trump and his allies, compared to local and state officials.

by calling in the military, trump has exposed exactly where he intends to go - full military repression in the united states. our streets and neighborhoods. colleges and universities. newsrooms and law firms. unions and workplaces. borders and transport hubs. online and off.

there is no rebellion. there is no danger of rebellion. i see this as unlawful, where the facts on the ground do not justify invocation of this law. it’s an assault on the right to protest and american democratic order. time for congress to step in and restrain this lawlessness.

authoritarians invariably deploy state (and parastate) violence for enforcement — but more importantly for terror and intimidation. this is all part of the plan.

This is a double burial. Hong Kong authorities charge Joshua Wong under the Beijing-imposed national security law with a second charge.

published this almost exactly five years ago: racism has always been at the root of american refusal to implement its human rights obligations foreignpolicy.com/2020/06/10/a...

More than 700 people (including me) have signed on to this petition against visa restrictions on Chinese students. It’s worth a read to understand why this Trump-Rubio move is yet another own goal and bad for American interests… medium.com/@lawasia/pet...

Wild to see masked tear gassing military-mode police next to the freeway sign for the 101, all because… …well, because NOTHING. A made up non-crisis triggered by delusional racial hysteria. Nothing is really happening at all. Nothing was wrong in L.A. Yet tear gas aggression under the 101. Madness

people will perceive america more and more like a police state every day, and trump will prove them right www.latimes.com/california/s...

⚠️ An Italian parliamentary committee has confirmed that the government used the Israeli-made #spyware Graphite, developed by Paragon, to hack the smartphones of several activists working with migrants. However, the committee flatly denied that 🇮🇹 was behind the hack of Francesco Cancellato’s phone.

Reading today: @techpolicypress.bsky.social unpacking the Rubio's contortions with the definition of censorship to threaten visa restrictions, with cameos by @davidakaye.bsky.social and @daphnek.bsky.social. What a trifecta! www.techpolicy.press/three-questi...

This is important- grassroots platform workers from 28 countries are gathering in Geneva this week to demand that the International Labor Organization hold the tech industry accountable for poor working conditions. www.techpolicy.press/gig-workers-...

With raids on journalists’ homes and the offices of independent media, authorities have again made clear their hostility to free reporting. We must keep attention focused on Belarus, and to remind those targeted, abused and jailed that we haven’t forgotten them. baj.media/en/security-...

still true, four months later

President Trump is asking lawmakers to claw back the $1.1 billion in federal subsidies for public broadcasting that Congress approved earlier this year. His request also includes cuts to foreign aid.

german media consistently nail the cover page

Once again I am calling for Democrats to introduce legislation requiring standardized uniforms, visible badge numbers with names, as well as a requirement for ICE and DHS agents to present proof that there is enough danger present to be masked to a judge when they get their warrant.

the final phase. 👌
