the international convention on enforced disappearances speaks directly to what the trump admin is doing. of course the US is not a party. www.ohchr.org/sites/defaul...

folks need to read this. an expanding enforced disappearances operation under way.

I was at a car wash in Culver City today that was raided twice last weekend by ICE. 25 car wash workers and 1 customer have been kidnapped over the past several days, and the whereabouts of most of them is unknown. I spoke to families of the kidnap victims: prospect.org/justice/2025...

yet another instance of the administration’s destruction of american soft power - and its leadership of global education. it’s sick and entirely anti-american, in the putinist sense.

BAD: 2 GOP House committee chairs launch witch hunt against immigration NGOs that received federal funds under Biden admin, asking, among other things, whether they sued the government or filed amicus briefs in cases against it. homeland.house.gov/2025/06/11/c...

There's SOOOO much going on, but I feel like people w/right wing MoCs and governors should call and get an on the record comment about this. Establish a record of these shitholes letting this fly.

A grim new development - Sen. Hawley attempting to leverage the LA protests to investigate & intimidate an immigrant rights group...

i think it’s fair to say that, even if orban’s hungary was a project 2025 model, trump has exceeded it in speed, cruelty and lawlessness.

paramilitaries are a natural consequence of j6 pardons

a government that attacks its own cities, weaponizes public agencies, represses the press and protest and education and research and health, detains and deports residents without due process, ignores court orders - that’s a govt that has lost its democratic legitimacy.

To the people in LA: Ring doorbells are spies. And Ring allows cops to watch through any doorbell they want without permission or a warrant. Switch off Alexa, Siri. Leave FB, Whatsapp; Use Signal messenger. Decloud. Self-host. VPN everything. Take care & stay safe 💚 Tell your friends in LA.

the protests are no longer solely about immigration. they are also about american resistance to autocracy, militarization and violence. it’s democracy defense in formation.

the move from ‘immigration crackdown’ to democracy destruction was seamless, because they are one and the same.

America’s Generals are terrified. They are cowed. They seem unlikely to hold the line and live up to their oaths to serve the U.S. Constitution. Trump violated the law (the Hatch Act) conducting a political rally at Fort Bragg, rousing the troops to cheer his slogans but the Generals stay silent.

In Malta, guilty verdicts in the case of Daphne Caruana Galizia bring full justice one step closer. But there’s more to be done: the government must follow Public Inquiry recommendations and ensure that no other journalists are ever silenced for their work. www.article19.org/resources/ma...

of all the lines in @governor.ca.gov's speech, this is among most important: "California may be first, but it clearly will not end here. Other states are next." Not even 1/2 year into trump's term. Authoritarianism feeds on outrages & spectacle. It will not stop unless we the people stop it.

We’ve leapt over a lot of red lines in the last week. But one I find most worrying is Trump/MAGA/ICE have ceased even pretending to claim some criminal pretext for cracking down on protected speech. It’s just straight up “if you criticize us, you’re getting throttled/arrested/disappeared.”

this is one of those moments where the national governors assn needs to step up and express solidarity with @governor.ca.gov and say clearly: ‘this is lawless. this is beyond trump’s authority. we oppose.’ they won’t because too many are captures. but they should.

the language of violence & repression against an american city. and he's saying it so that armed forces hear him, an incitement to use their weapons. plainly illegal.

a threat like this would have been an impeachable scandal for nearly any other president. for this one, it's just tuesday. but it's no less hideous, and every republican member of congress has to own the fact that they are firmly in the anti-free speech camp.

williams, who was so up in arms about 'cancel culture', now claims to be the gatekeeper for protest. complete fraud. as is tapper, reposting this.

"there need to be strong voices countering his blunt fictions" - key theme in @michellegoldberg.bsky.social oped

The UN faces a financial and political crisis, weakening global coordination. As the U.S. retreats, China gains influence—just as digital governance needs unified action. My latest for @techpolicypress.bsky.social www.techpolicy.press/muddling-thr...

Pam Bondi's brother and the principal assistant to Jeanine Pirro have lost their bids to become (respectively) the President and Treasurer of the D.C. Bar. Gift link: www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/202...

UPDATE: David Huerta was just released from custody!

A full Tejano band in a big truck rolled into the Olvera St, the lead singer has a Fuck ICE shirt on, and this protest is now a dance party

Trump is acting like a dictator—deploying the military against its own citizens, threatening the arrest of elected officials, charging peaceful political opponents like David Huerta on dubious charges because they expressed their 1st amendment rights.

unlawful, unprecedented. an invasion & assault on the residents of california. congress so far is useless. but governors are not. stand up, in unison, because this is an attack on all states' self-governance. trump will come after all of them eventually.

grateful to @bedoyaftc.bsky.social for his FTC leadership. this is the outcome trump illegally demanded & that the oligarchic right will cheer. it's america's loss.

"The Guardian’s reporting found that dozens of investigators were following student protesters on and off campus, and in some instances were confrontational, cursed at students, threatened them, and in one case drove a car at a student who had to jump out of the way..."

one of the greats. RIP.

At least 2 journalists have been injured while covering protests in LA. ARTICLE 19 joins partner press freedom and human rights groups in calling for journalists to protected. They must be able to carry out their vital work in safety. www.independent.co.uk/news/world/a...

Exactly right. There is a vast corpus of guidance and soft law on managing peaceful protests responsibly, including a practical toolkit for law enforcement by former @unsrapporteurfoaa.bsky.social Clement Voule: www.ohchr.org/en/documents...

the american experience of protest over the past ten years is that police are too often poorly trained when it comes to journalist protection. harassment to detentions to injuries, they fail basic rules. it's one of those under-reported outrages for a country that claims to embrace free speech.

super important to keep facts straight. all on the ground reporting shows the situation in LA is tense, was tense, but in no way out of control apart from law enforcement disproportionate use of force. (ps donate to public radio)
