A lot of eyes today about the Los Angeles sheriff department's role. A few months ago, @psfrench.bsky.social reported this telling story on one reason misconduct is so prevalent in that office: someone tried a few things to root it out — and now she's facing criminal charges over that work:

Everything that’s happened over the past six months has been a response to an imaginary crisis. There is no immigrant invasion. No trade crisis. No scientific or governance crisis. Just people completely high off their own supply trying to fundamentally reorder society. None of this had to happen.

Let's address a couple things about masked ICE and DHS officers in tactical gear. 1. They're not "Proud Boys cosplaying as federal agents." Yes, there's crossover between LEO's and right-wing groups. Yes, these guys ARE real federal agents. You don't get onto an SRT without years of experience.

Hot take. The government isn’t subsidizing university budgets. Universities are lending subsidized expertise to research and development that contributes to the public good. It’s called partnership.

David Graeber said this in 2012 about protests in New York City. Though this is increasingly what is happening this week in Los Angeles. davidgraeber.org/articles/con...

In itself it's not the biggest thing but Congress specifically passed a law requiring ICE to allow access to members of Congress because of Trump's antics in the first term. This isn't even norms. It's violating black letter statute law.

The illegitimate, lawless, and authoritarian regime in control of the government of the United States is at war with the people of the United States.

cops doing crime on camera. as @chadloder.bsky.social has been pointing out all day, this is totally illegal. cops doing crime. on camera. adjust your stupid headlines accordingly.

there is zero logic to QI. if it's unconstitutional, it is regardless of the number of times it's been litigated. the idea that you'd need *notice* not to do this is absurd and morally bankrupt.

I just have to say for those of you not in LA that in the days before the horrible raids started, there was no crisis or whatever they would let you believe. It wasn't like something was escalating out of control and somebody had to step in. THEY are creating the problems.

beyond the thin veneer of concern behind all of these opeds is the much simpler truth that their authors desperately want to describe something that is very obviously their problem (fewer people want to post in the venues they like more) as though it were our problem

Our community needs you now more than ever! If you are interested in getting involved, please join the San Diego Progressive Democrats for our monthly meeting tomorrow at 6:15 p.m. We will be joined by Wendy Gelernter of Take Action San Diego and other guests: @takeactionsandiego.bsky.social

I'll never forget that Linda Tirado lost an eye and is dying from TBI-induced dementia caused by a cop shooting her in the face by a rubber bullet at the George Floyd protests.

If you are arrested during a protest or action against ICE or CPD in Chicago, I can represent you pro bono. Email me at [email protected]. (This is an offer for criminal defense; I unfortunately don't do immigration law.)

So ICE caused a traffic jam, started their raid right in front of the traffic jam, and then attacked the people stuck in traffic who were angry about the whole thing and recording it on their phones. People sometimes have a hard time understanding that police start the violence, but come on

Trump & Miller are very consciously not going after criminals. They’re going after moms & dads and it’s a fucking atrocity.

If we’re suspending reporters for upsetting Stephen Miller, I’d like to highlight this post I made last night.

"As citizens, our task is clear: pay attention to these voices, understand their warnings, and recognize that judicial pushback alone cannot preserve democratic norms. When judges start speaking in the language of constitutional crisis, democracy needs every defender it can find."

So, in case you later see bullshit about conflict between troops/ICE/cops & protesters in DTLA just now - the protesters did nothing. The assorted copfolk pushed forward & forced the protesters back, using riot shields & tear gas, to clear a path for a convoy of vehicles entering the facility.

Wonder what was different the last time a POTUS deployed the National Guard against a Governor's wishes? It was in Alabama, and LBJ deployed the National Guard to PROTECT civil rights protesters. To protect the rights and lives of protesters.

“The idea that immigration enforcement is the most significant national security and public safety concern that we as a country face is deeply unserious.” https://trib.al/NlZyqwr

This story exemplifies the reason people are outraged at ICE. This guy did nothing wrong. He broke not a single law. He was a guard at a base that housed US troops. He came here legally through humanitarian parole. He had an asylum application pending. Yet the Trump admin had ICE grab him anyway.

If you think what's happening in L.A. now are riots then you don't know what a riot is. What's happening in L.A. is the same shit that happened during the BLM protests, just with ICE: Peaceful protestors protest peacefully until the LAPD/SD/law enforcement shows up & purposely escalates one-sidedly.

CA Gov: Do not deploy National Guard in LA CA AG: Do not deploy National Guard in LA LAPD: Do not deploy National Guard in LA Trump: I have no choice but to deploy National Guard in LA Trump incites violence. Reject his illegal orders. Uphold the US Constitution—not loyalty to a draft dodger felon.

Important information. Remember one day, there will be accountability for this!

I’m just going to get this out now, since I know it’s coming, and I can just link to it. DO NOT FETISHIZE NON-VIOLENCE. It is a PRACTICE and a DISCIPLINE. The people who employed it successfully trained RIGOROUSLY. It’s not just a decision, because it goes against basic human instincts. 1/x

It’s obvious but worth drawing out what raids of Home Depot’s of all places is about. It’s rounding up people who are really eager for work and for whom there is work, peoples whose labor is in demand. We know this but shows just how far it is from rounding up just the bad guys.

“Under a tyranny, most friends are a liability. One quarter of them turn ‘reasonable’ and become your enemies, one quarter are afraid to stop and speak, and one quarter are killed and you die with them. But the blessed final quarter keep you alive.” — Sinclair Lewis, “It Can't Happen Here”

OUT NOW: Chris Mirasola explains Trump’s memorandum purporting to deploy 2,000 National Guard personnel to respond to protests against ICE immigration raids in Los Angeles. www.lawfaremedia.org/article/the-...

Tom Homan says if “anti ICE violence” doesn’t stop, someone will get hurt. People have already been hurt. Some have lost their lives. Many have been disappeared to prisons in other countries or are being detained in atrocious conditions in the US. People have already been hurt. That’s why we rise.

First they illegally deport citizens. Then they unleash ICE to terrorize communities. Now they’ve got the National Guard in L.A. to silence protestors. This ain’t about law and order. This is what authoritarianism looks like.

They seem to think there’s a right to anonymous policing, but not to anonymous protest.

Boosting this for good measure. To quote the CNN piece: "Homan accused Gov. Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass of creating “a sanctuary for criminals,” adding that neither are exempt from potential arrest." This should alarm the hell out of all of us.

I keep saying this, in a desperate effort to manifest this into the world: I hope that the Trump 2 admin FINALLY breaks the narrative that “tough on crime” GOPers actually care abt public safety. They. Do. Not. “Tough on crime” is abt SOCIAL CONTROL. Not safety.

…by design. The only way “work reporting requirements” save federal money is BY kicking people off the program. That’s the entire point.
