100%. I was an undergrad the night of Tianenmen. Took a walk and watched campus leftists ignite a fire at a BofA to protest Apartheid, the cause of the day. The contrast stuck: US college kids lighting symbolic fires while Chinese kids were crushed by tanks. Well aware of the history.

One can hold both opinions: that the Trump administration's actions are horrifying, and that Columbia's reputation has taken a massive hit. Academic-disrupting protests either reflect campus-wide views, or are dictated by the minority. Laughable academic environment for a serious student.

Oooh... "Top 10"!? LOL... so was its law school: "Give us passing grades. No final exams. We're traumatized, but so-o-o serious!" So very seriously academically unserious & overrated. All this for only $100K/year. Presently, not a place for serious students - it's a playground for child-activists.

My kid is graduating from HS & headed to college to study math. The last university on earth I wanted to pay for him to attend is Columbia University. It's not a place for serious students: it's an unserious playground for child-activists who haven't yet ever earned rent.

Waiting for Trump to blame the current wildfires in Georgia & the Carolinas on [checks notes]…. Californians and our water policies.

Congrats! You must be the 37th guy for that RE agent but managed to seal the deal.

“This is how competitive authoritarianism works - you find vulnerable targets and persecute them.” Good job! You just described in a pithy nutshell what intolerant assholes at Columbia did to Jewish students with the complicity of the university’s administration.

If you think about this Congress as his 4th wife, it makes sense that the honeymoon period would be particularly brief.

OMFG. After the Universe stops hating me, I'm going to that sushi place in Japan & then jetting over to be your "cousin" at the Chinese family reunion barbecue.

Want. Immediately. Never been to Japan, because the Universe hates me.

"Podz" is acceptable shorthand on a character-constrained public interface.

This was completely foreseeable after his inauguration-eve press conference.

My eldest is a senior and attended zoom-informationals all summer & fall to learn about multiple colleges: the student-presenters at Ivys & near-Ivys usually each said their land acknowledgment when beginning zoom presentations. It’s you who aren’t where these are routine.
comment in response to post
“Real life”: Start of this year, principal at my sons’ public high school instituted a land acknowledgement policy that required its recital before every class. Every. Class. Like a prayer. Lasted several months before fading. Now just at assemblies. “Just” is doing a lot of work above….

Ancient geology as political destiny.

Same. Campaign rally of lies is unworthy of both comment & viewership. Especially when “challenged” by performance-art opposition and its juvenile auction paddles. I watched my kid play HS baseball and then we watched tape of the Warriors beating the Knicks in MSG. Far superior use of civic time.

Democrats should announce that they will seize any and all such properties through eminent domain from any purchaser at their earliest & next available opportunity. Freeze out sellers.

Our beloved tuxedo in the thick of our teenager's clean laundry... deposited on his beanbag. She appeared at 2am starving & flea-ridden as a 6-week old in our backyard - would guess coyotes & owls made off with the rest. Now she's ours and we are hers.

This is so painfully, obviously true, it defies comprehension that one must speak out against it. And yet…. What on earth have we become?
comment in response to post
No. Your mom describes the teaching of age-old "tolerance." DEI is absolutely not that in practice: in fact, it's antithetical. Hotlines are stupid. But you & she are equating apples & oranges.

I assume Orbán is/was the messenger/go-between for Putin during the US election. He met with Putin in Moscow July 5, 2024…

I agree. But I believe it isn’t necessarily only a Putin-Trump axis. Only appears such now. Xi will be revealed as the third partner at the carving table. My thread below from a month ago.

Publicly funded scientific research is a public good that generates timeless benefits for humanity. The system of percentage-coverage of indirect costs is a private good that is consumed & enjoyed locally by universities & municipalities. Sorry - it should be locally and/or privately financed.

"We must build a system...." This post gets it: what Trump demonstrated in 1 short month is that our present configuration is fundamentally vulnerable: the concentration of power invites its capture & malignant use. To guard against tyranny, we must devolve that power away from the core.

Remember when that song came out, hearing it on the radio in our carpool to school in the morning. Haunting & captivating to my ear. Years later, I was asked to backup a singer on bass as she sang this, a song I think I love even more. youtu.be/VqW-eO3jTVU?...
