Debate was dismissed or minimized. And the very very few House Reps that stood in opposition to the war, such as my Rep at the time Barbara Lee (she spoke for me!), received endless death threats for at least a decade afterwards. Things only started changing when folks got tired of soldiers dying.

I just recall feeling so defeated...yes me and my friends were against the war, and we were heartened by the very big protests at the time...but we were all very aware that public support for it (at the beginning anyway) was extremely high, and that after 9/11 Americans wanted retaliation somehow.
