Perhaps one of the Carney government jobs should be to have Canada Post to offer email services.

Never said that. Don’t put words in my mouth, please.

Losing the S makes it more pronounceable so it’s not surprising that people go that way.

Makes sense but the thread is full of people saying “why wouldn’t rocks be as old as the earth”. Sigh.

The structure of an igneous rock is set when it hardens, and sedimentary and metamorphic rocks have more complex histories. So yes, the raw material - in tens of atoms - isn’t new, but the structures they form are.

No. This is a geologically active planet. Look up the rock cycle for details.

Okay but I have seen things there that you people wouldn’t believe, like people stopping traffic to escort a giant raccoon across Yonge St.

This is mostly in Durham Region in the Toronto area but a few of the municipalities are elsewhere in southern Ontario.

My hydro provider is owned by ten different municipalities.

True but there are a lot of scammy “portable AC” units which are just swamp coolers.

Are these the “swamp cooler” things?

My high school closed to e year I graduated, so there’s never been a chance at a reunion. I’m okay with that.

I agree completely that it’s a lousy practice, but to be safe, I create actual passwords for them and store them.
Hopefully the adoption of passkeys will continue and make all of this irrelevant.

The one gap for me is that it doesn’t have good support for “security questions”. So far mine are all autogenerated passwords from 1Password, but for new ones I think I will just go to a diceware site and copy/paste them into the note area of Apple Passwords. Not perfect, but the rest is so good.
comment in response to

Agreed, the syncing is VERY seamless. You can even copy/paste MFA code generation in from tools like 1Password so that you don’t have to set them up again.
It’s not as flexible as 1Password, but it’s much more seamless.

I’ve been using Apple Passwords for credential trials including coder-based 2FA and it works and syncs just fine for me.

No worries - like I said, I agree with you.

I find the reporting on the January date odd, because a few weeks ago I was seeing stories on how PP wanted the review to be this fall in order to avoid giving opposition time to organize. Seems like this was a loss for him.

I don’t disagree with you at all - the point was strictly on getting a reliable rocket.

Is this approach right? I think there’s a strong case that it’s not working for Starship, and at any rate causes environmental damage via debris being strewn around. It’s not really defensible - but to say that the approach hasn’t worked in the past for them would be incorrect.
comment in response to

Starship, though, seems to have had a core design flaw that they are trying to address. Basically, from what I’ve read, they’re struggling to make their promised payload capacity and are trying to do things to get there, and clearly it’s not going well.

Some background - SpaceX’s approach has always been to fly earlier and gather data rather than spending more time/money on simulations and so forth. For Falcon 9 it worked - it exploded in early development a lot and is now the most reliable rocket in human history.

The odd thing is it’s not simple “cheapness”. If I was being cheap, I would also be applying it to the rest of my family. It’s something much more insidious.

I don’t know if it’s related, but I’ve realized I’ve developed a strong resistance to “treating myself”. I’m okay with treating my wife and kids, but not myself.
At some level, it’s simply being careful with money, but I think I’ve gone too far and I need to dial it back.

I’m seeing that this may have been a Us wish list, not something we’ve agreed to.

One caution for people is wifi. In principle, a device could gradually try wifi passwords for any network it can reach (not necessarily your own) and manage to connect anyway if it figures out the password. I don’t know if any devices actually do that, but does seem to be a risk.

Exactly. I hear some newer TVs are insistent on having an internet connection but none of mine have had a problem.

No idea. I had some offered as a work anniversary reward but there wasn’t enough information there to really understand how prices compare.
comment in response to

I haven’t tried it but apparently “commercial” TVs for installation in restaurants and such don’t have the “smart” stuff built in.
My solution is to never connect a TV to the internet and instead to use Apple TVs for my streaming. Not perfect, but better.

Metrolinx owns something like 80% of the tracks they operate over, so ownership isn’t a major issue.

I’ve been able to drop into our local one in the afternoon and have no wait times. The problem is that people who are fasting for their test all want to come first thing in the morning, quite naturally.

Mostly agreed. Andor is great, but I’m otherwise done with Star Wars. I’m done with Marvel. And while I’ve been loving Strange New Worlds, I’m probably close to being done with Star Trek.
Enough remaking things. New things are what interest me.

And in particular, future Coast Guard equipment replacements. Not unreasonable - the Americans do as well.
I’d assume there will be some changes to the Coast Guard’s operating mandates, but it’s not clear if those details are out.

As retronyms go, it’s not bad. It feels much more natural than, for example, some of the NASA interplanetary probe names.
