Just this evening we've confirmed a 3rd Powerful Owl nest to be active. Before sunset the male was staking out the hollow looking sleepy. Then just after sunset we saw the female come out of the hollow & fly around. Many more still to check out. [photo from previous season] #birds #brisbane #wildoz

Male Powerful Owl sleeping at dusk. Once the sun had set the female came out of the nearby nest hollow. After some flying around and calling the female took the bat the male is holding back to the hollow, confirming it is an active nest and there are chicks in there. #brisbane #birds #wildoz

A fascinating paper just out by Dan Parker et al. on human Powerful Owl interactions in urban environments. @lucyparkerpaul.bsky.social and I were two of the interviewees for the study. And Figure 3 has 9 of my photos of POwls :-) #wildoz besjournals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/...

It's weird. I've never before continually thought, "Well, I guess I won't be able to travel to USA for quite some time", while liking things on social media.

Superb Fairywren sketch. I like to draw (via Zoom) with a friend in the States, and this is what I did yesterday with her. Every drawing is practice for the next.

In one study, 36 of 37 dead Powerful Owls tested positive for rat poison. Which isn't to say they necessarily died from it, but rat poison is throughout native wildlife. 2nd generation poisons must be banned. There are alternatives.

The eggs in the Powerful Owl nests across Brisbane will be hatching over the next few days. A couple of weeks after that we may be able to hear the Owlets trilling in the nests. Then in late July / early August, they'll emerge from the hollows for the first time. #brisbane #birds #wildoz

Male Powerful Owl doing sentry duty near the nesting hollow this morning. #brisbane #birds #wildoz

First rule of owl detecting: whenever you find some interesting looking scat on the ground, always look up. #brisbane #birds #wildoz

As far as I know there is only one record of Powerful Owls using a termite nest for breeding. If they were going to pick, you'd think it was would be this one. #brisbane #wildoz

Grey Fantail sketch. Trying out some new pencils. Every drawing is practice for the next.

Male Powerful Owl doing sentry duty in his favourite tree near to the old-growth tree hollow in which the female is nesting. I was slightly concerned when he wasn't there or apparent nearby yesterday as nests sometimes fail, so I went back today. But I needn't have worried #brisbane #birds #wildoz

Owls in Towels. This website is entirely satisfactory. owlsintowels.org

I've done this snake handling course, and it was fantastic! Christina and Chris are the best! Though I have to admit I did gulp a bit when moving up from catching a Carpet Python to an Eastern Brown.
