Yeah, I am also very skeptical that landlords are hoarding empty apartments in SF. Perhaps PE is doing a little, but it's not like there are vast neighborhoods of mostly empty buildings. My totally uninformed opinion is it's likely people who are too broke to update their in-law units or something.

Sorry, I don't know what you're asking exactly. Just showing that at least in SF, DSA thought there were a ton of homes that were just sitting vacant - i.e. someone bought it and let it sit empty, which is what the original post was discussing.

It was a pretty big push by DSA San Francisco a few years back. "The tax will make speculators and landlords pay for the vacant homes they hoard – denying stable housing to thousands of San Franciscans"

I'm not a real estate expert, but there's additional costs in commercial real estate, such as building out spaces to fit what the business needs (plumbing, electrical). Hard for either party to absorb big costs for a 1 year lease, outside of popup stores as mentioned above.

Not to keep the debate going outside that thread, but it's still a useful and important construct. See, for example, discourse re the 99%. If someone wants to talk about poor uneducated people, they can do that separately without redefining a useful and relevant term.

Yes, the Stancil take is that you have to be making well under median wage + no college degree. Nearly everyone else thinks if you work for a living instead of collecting rent / dividends / etc. then you're working class.

100%. Stancil take is teachers are not working class which seems absurd on nearly every level. I don't see how he has so many defenders on this.

Probably both column A and column B. The white picket fence as the prototypical American dream home likely induced a lot of people to move out of urban cores, and once they moved, they became more isolationist, even if that wasn't their intention, simply due to fewer interactions with others.

It's GS. I'm honestly shocked it isn't higher.

In addition to Steve Jackson games, cardboardedison.com/tariffs and stonemaiergames.com/the-darkest-... also discuss impacts. Seems like we might see a shift to direct-to-consumer games like Kickstarter once prices are known, but your FLGS is likely to go under b/c of margins.

Isn't it always open season for liberals on leftists? Liberals never criticize conservatives outside "they make great points but..." I've literally never heard any liberal say "you know what, those leftists were right all along, I should have been on their side"

A highly creative friend made this. It's incredibly detailed and the best thing to fall asleep to I've ever seen. And that's if you're not even a baseball fan. If you're a fan, it's 10x better.

Axos gives 3.3% interest on checking too (you have to jump through a few hoops to get the best rate) and unlimited ATM fee refunds.

This is exactly vote blue no matter who energy, and hopefully wakes people up to why democrats can't be trusted.

Workers owning their companies goes a huge way towards reducing the exclusive profit motive of corporations - more incentivized to improve their communities, hire for long periods of time, etc. "owning the means of production" = communism / democracy depending on your POV.

Yes, as much as this headline kinda gives off kind of an icky feeling, anti racism, as opposed to a passive "not racist" label, requires action. I think the question "is this action (dating) anti-racist?", is fair, but the answer in this case is basically "no."
